It certainly looks that way. The UFC has recently stated that it hopes to return to Canada in April and believes that a return to the Bell Centre in Montreal is the way to go.
Fans won't have to wait too long for the event either, should it occur, as April 18th has already been penciled in as the date of choice. This date is not finalized however, and it appears that a major roadblock for the UFC is, once again, hockey. When the UFC first wanted to venture into Montreal it was unable to find a suitable Saturday night in which the Montreal Canadians were not playing a home game. This time, with the Canadians on track to make the post season, the schedule is for the NHL club is not known.
Here's to hoping the UFC can lock down the date and the NHL can work around them…
In addition to announcing a hopeful date and location, the UFC has already begun to think about potential match-ups for the upcoming card, which should be UFC 97. It is likely that the main event of the evening will put pound for pound king Anderson Silva in a battle with Thales Leites for middleweight supremacy. David Loiseau is also scheduled to make his UFC return against Ed Herman, while Jonathan Goulet and Tamdan McCrory may lock horns as well. Dana White also hinted that since Frank Mir came away from his recent fight with no injuries, he and Brock Lesner may be facing each other in April as well.
Could the fans see two title fights in Montreal? Fightlinker makes a case that it could happen just to please Anderson Silva…
And who knows, there's always that other Canadian scheduled to fight on January 31st who could be booked for his backyard once again should he be unharmed. Wishful thinking, perhaps…
Either way, with a month of January already stacked with MMA goodness, and another possible card in Montreal to look forward to, this is gearing up to be a great year to be an MMA fan.
Who knows, maybe we will see the sport sanctioned in Ontario and New York by the end of '09 and the UFC on network television. Oh, and that UFC 100 card that everyone's talking about should occur in the early summer and the card should take shape sooner than later now as well.
…How can you not love this?
