Well, it was a numbers game and a matter of time, but the Rangers finally found a roster spot for Dan Fritsche. Of course, it was with another team…
The Rangers, desperately in need of defensive depth, moved the infrequently-used forward to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defensive “prospect” Erik Reitz.
Reitz, a former 6th round pick, has decent size, skating ability and what appears to be a knack for defensive play. He's not a point-producer, and never has been.
As far as Fritsche is concerned, the throw-in on the Nikolai Zherdev deal was never able to establish himself as a full-time player with the Rangers. He had one goal and 3 assists in the 16 games he drew in on, and was simply a victim of forward depth on the Rangers. He will likely see more playing time with the Wild, and be able to show the skills that made him a very good player for the USA at the World Juniors a few years back. He has offensive talent, but hasn't managed to transfer that skill to the NHL level yet. Perhaps this is his opportunity.
Erik Reitz, the 170th pick in 2000, seems like a poor man's version of Chris Phillips. Sure, that doesn't sound like much right now, but what it effectively means is that he is a solid positional player who brings a no-frills skillset to the table. He'll prove valuable in both the minor leagues, and in emergency call-up situations. There is nothing notable or fancy about his game. He's simply a decent pickup to fill gaps.
Before people start opining about this being the start of a major move (let's not forget the Rangers are attached to every big-ticket trade chip out there), I think it's important to consider the fact that the cap situation doesn't improve much with this deal. Realistically, it would appear this is simply an organizational move that might have been made to improve the AHL affiliate's defence corps. It's a move that comes with no cap implications for the Rangers, but also doesn't really add much to the current lineup.
