Well, the axe has finally dropped on Tom Renney, and he has been relieved of his head coaching position with the Rangers. This latest development hardly comes as much of a shock, as Renney's tenure was long speculated to be in jeopardy.
With the Rangers' latest setback, last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the lowly Leafs, their perilous descent from post-season contention continued, as it was their 10th loss in 12 games.
Renney was in his sixth season with the team, and apparently his shtick was wearing thin.
While no replacement has been named at this time, many people believe former Devils' bench boss, Jim Schoenfeld will get the nod. Schoenfeld currently an assistant GM with the Rangers on the player personnel side of things.
With Renney's dismissal, as Kevin Gibson pointed out in a comment previously, all four coaches who started the season in Europe have now been fired. Tampa's Barry Melrose, Ottawa's Craig Hartsburg, Pittsburgh's Michel Therrien and now Renney. It is interesting to note that these are also the only coach firings to date!
Personally, this move doesn't come as a surprise, other than it happening too late. It was evident that Renney simply wasn't getting the most out of his players, and it was quite obvious that under him the free-fall out of a playoff position would not stop.
However, while it might be more practical to let Schoenfeld take over, I'm not sure it wouldn't benefit the team more to give John Tortorella a call. Torts is a task-master, and would likely have a more immediate impact than Schoenfeld, who hasn't been an NHL head coach since the 1998-99 season (Phoenix). His career coaching record also isn't particularly inspiring, as he holds a 256-246-78 (.509) mark.
So, with this news, who would you pick to take over the Rangers? Is it too little too late? Can they turn things around? Let's hear it STB! Post your comments below!
