What would spring training be without an injury to an Angels starting pitcher? The Angels All-Star right hander Ervin Santana will start the 2009 season on the DL. An MRI traced discomfort in Santana's elbow to an sprained MCL.
Manager Mike Scioscia spoke about the injury, “We'll slow him down, let the stuff in his elbow calm down, and go from there.” Scioscia added that he did not anticipate Santana missing an “appreciable” part of the season.
Ironically Santana emerged on the scene last year in large part due to injuries in the Halos starting rotation. With Kelvim Escobar and John Lackey out, Santana and Joe Saunders came in and became unexpected All-Stars. Santana was 16-7 with an 3.49 ERA earning himself a new four-year $30 million contract at the start of spring training.
Santana's injury will make the battle for the final spot in the rotation a battle for the four and five spots behind John Lackey, Joe Saunders and Jered Weaver. The battle between Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart and Shane Loux will now take front stage in the Angels remaining Cactus League games. Yesterday Adenhart staked his claim throwing three shutout innings as the Angels defeated San Fransisco 8-1. The win extended the Angels winning streak to six games, their 9-1 record is currently the best in the Majors. If I had to make the call right now I would anticipate Adenhart and Moseley will fill out the rotation for now.
