I've had it with this guy. Matt Jones, the Jaguars talented wide receiver, is sitting in a jail cell today after violating the terms of the plea deal in his cocaine possession case. Jones isn't allowed to drink alcohol or take drugs and is subject to random testing, which revealed alcohol in his system. Jones telling the judge that he “drank a couple of beers playing golf” is a classic case of downplaying what he did and not taking responsibility. The point is not that having a couple of beers is wrong, the point is that Jones agreed to the terms of his plea deal and knowingly and openly violated these terms.
For one thing, any friend that can't help you get through 18 holes without a cold one (when you face jail time if you drink anything) isn't really a friend! But it falls on Jones to make up for his mistakes by showing the world he is serious about taking responsibility. Instead he comes off as just another arrogant rich kid expecting the world to bow down to him because of his athletic skill.Â
Jones opted for 6 days in jail over 6 weeks at a rehab facility. Can't say I agree with that choice. For one thing, if it were me, the whole rape factor would eliminate jail as a possibility. If it were me I would have done the rehab, what better way to show the world you are serious. And even if I wasn't able to admit I had a problem, I still might learn something helpful, get myself cleaned up and psychologically ready to dominate on the gridiron. But no. Jones misses his widescreen TV, his video games, his car, his life as a free man, and he'd risk six days of raping to be back enjoying that life sooner.
Jones has not appeared contrite or apologetic at any point in the process. He had his father giving quotes to defend him to the media. He made coach Del Rio furious getting caught by reporters laughing it up over an inside joke in the locker room after one of the Jags 11 losses. (Who was he laughing with? Fellow role model and wide receiver Reggie Williams, who, after being cut from the team, was arrested two weeks ago for DWI and marijuana possession).
Jones would never have lasted this long if not for his God given talent. However, he is still learning the wide receiver position (after converting from QB) and his attitude day to day has a huge impact on the success of the Jaguars. Jones became the go-to-guy on offense last year. Someone with that type of role has a huge impact on team chemistry and any team where this guy is setting the tone is not going to have a successful attitude. So trade him now, get some value. Right now everything is handed to this guy on a silver platter and I just don't see the hunger and sacrifice needed to make the Jags better (or even competitive).
STB readers do you agree!?!?? I particularly want to hear from Matt Jones fans ready to defend this guy!
On the lighter side I'll step off my soapbox to announce the signing of ex-Eagle Tra Thomas to shore up the offensive line. Thomas just allowed two sacks of McNabb in 658 attempts last year. After an inactive free agency period last year, I love the fact that the Jaguars went straight to their most glaring need. The guy is an 11 year vet however, hopefully injuries will not be an issue.
