CLEARANCE SPECIAL, TWO PLAYOFF SPOTS – GET’EM CHEAP

Posted By Scott Brown On Mar 11 2009 @ 9:37 pm In Edmonton Oilers | No Comments

Wow, what a sorry excuse for a playoff race. Less then twenty games to go and all the tortoises are inching their way towards the finish line. Sadly for hockey fans, slow and not so steady may just win this race.

Last night the juggeraughts that currently inhabit 7th through 10th place in the Western conference were all in action, with key points on the line the best any of these teams could manage was a lose in OT. Note to NHL brass, feel free to cut the playoff participation to pool to six teams this year, no one else seems to want in.

Rule of thumb since the lock-out was that 92(ish) points gives you a fighting chance at the playoffs, ring up 95 and you give yourself a solid shot at securing 8th place or better.

This year the projected bottom end of the group plays out like:

6: Columbus 90
7: Oilers 88
8: Wild 87

9: Preds 87
10: Stars 86

90 points gets you 6th place in the Western conference? Heck even the 5th place Canucks are only playing at a 96 point clip.

2007/2008

6th 95
8th 91

2006/2007

6th 107
8th 96

2005/2006

6th 98
8th 95

Now don't get me wrong, I like the fact that more teams are in the race until the end but at the expensive of inspired competitive hockey?

Last 10

Oil 3-4-3
Preds 6-2-2 (however they've now lost 2 in a row)
Wild 4-4-2
Stars 2-7-1

Which lame dog is going to limp past the finish line first?
