Pace let go, what’s next for Rams

Orlando Pace, the 7-time Pro Bowler offensive tackle drafted in 1997 by the St. Louis Rams, has been let go. Pace, 33, has battled numerous injuries over the past few seasons. The move will save the Rams $6M under the salary cap, money that can be used for free agents or to help resign Pro Bowl safety OJ Atogwe to a long-term contract.

Pace was the 1st overall pick of the 97' draft. Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom believes Pace will be remembered as “one of the greatest Rams of all-time.”

Not every day does a player of Pace's stature become available. But when you consider the Rams are trying to cut salary of their payroll ($6M is no small amount), his injury history over the past few years and the Rams possibly targeting Pace's replacement with the #2 overall pick in the draft, the move becomes much more easier to understand.

Wide receiver Torry Holt, is another player who may be on the way out. He would save the Rams $8M if they choose to go that route.

If they do go that route, the Rams will have lost 2 veterans who were a big part of their two trips to the Super Bowl, playoff success and numerous highlights as the greatest show on turf. Times are changing in St. Louis. The team that went 2-14 last year will already have a much different look come next season.
