On a truly Magical Night St. Patty’s (Elias) Day turned into St. Marty’s Night as Martin Brodeur became the NHL’S all time win’s leader.
The Captain Jamie Langenbrunner started the scoring 40 seconds into the game on a beautiful feed by Zach Parise. Less than 2 minutes later Travis Zajac added to the lead and the monumental occasion was well on its way. Patrik Elias finally got the point he needed to become the New Jersey Devils franchise leader in points surpassing John Maclean’s 16 year record with point 702 on a beautiful assist shorthanded to Brian Gionta.
The sellout crowd at the Prudential Center was a buzz all night and as Brodeur’s record got closer and as the Blackhawks buzzed around the net in the final minutes Brodeur required 1 more big save to secure this monumental mark!!
Brodeur continued his idol’s tradition of cutting the nets off his post once the game was over! and for the first time in his career without a Stanley Cup over his head he took a skate around the rink to absorb the atomsphere. Everyone knew it was just a matter of time before Brodeur got this record at the beginning of the season but with Marty’s injury it sure put a delay on it. For the Devils to win 8 of 9 to get it this quickly is truly shocking!
A double night of honoring for Marty started off in Saturday Night in his home town in Montreal (My hat is off to the Montreal fans for showing respect to Marty on this big night). He then carried forward this momentum and had a true night to celebrate his accomplishments in front of New Jersey faithful.
With 3 more years left on his latest contract and what appears to be a lot left in his tank, just how far will Brodeur set this mark for the next great one? I for one hope I never see a goalie break his record but like they say records are meant to be broken! A truly special Night capped off with a classy speech and many memorable moments for all. Way to go Patrik and WAY TO GO MARTY!!!!!!!
