The Oakland Raiders have swapped centers with the Miami Dolphins….
The Miami Dolphins signed former Oakland Raiders center Jake Grove to a very heavy contract only a couple weeks ago, and in return the Oakland Raiders have taken Miami's former center Samson Satele.
The Raiders have traded an undisclosed draft pick in order to attain Satele from the Dolphins. That pick is rumored to be in the lower rounds, and based on the Raiders not having a 5th round pick, my guess is that it was for a 6th or 7th. Although it could be possible that it was for a 4th round pick.
Satele was drafted in the second round in 2007 and was only one of 4 players to start in all 16 games as a rookie within the last 10 years. He also guarnered several all-rookie honors, and followed it up by helping the Dolphins win the AFC East in 2008.
Satele fell out of favor with the Dolphins in 2008 because they complained that he was not physical enough, and that he relyed on his physical talent to get him by.
Regardless of the reason why Satele was traded from the Dolphins, I for one and happy with the deal. Jake Grove had a lot of potential, but he simply couldn't stay healthy, and the contract that he got was far too high. Satele is entering into only his 3rd year, and he has proven that he has the talent to play the game well. He may need some solid coaching, but that will be exactly what he will get in Oakland.
The Raiders would have been hard pressed not to take a center in this years draft, and that center would have to have been aquired in the second, or third round, in order to solidify a good prospect. By trading a later round pick, for Satele, the Raiders can now use the 2nd and 3rd round picks for other needs, plus they get a center that already has two years of NFL experience, who was a 2nd round pick anyway.
Samson Satele is a 6'3″, 300Ibs 24 year old from Hawaii, and he has played every game for the past two seasons. He has played a couple of those games at guard, so his versitility may come in handy.
The Raiders now have Satele, John Wade and Chris Morris at center, with long snapper Jon Condo in the fold as well.
I believe that this move solidifies the center position.
In other news, Raider tackle Cornell Green is in jail after being arrested for assulting the mother of his two children. He will be up on abuse charges and assult with a deadly weapon.
Nice move Cornell!!!
Hopefully the Raiders can void his contract and send him packing, because along with being a wife beater, he can't play football very well either.
