Cutler to Jets? Here we go again

Will the Jets trade for another high profile quarterback the second year in a row?

Oh no…there's no way I'm getting involved in this mess again.

The popular rumor making the rounds is that the New York Jets are one of the teams interested in trading for disgruntled Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.  If there is any truth to the rumor, this would be the second offseason in which the Jets attempted to plug their quarterback vacancy with a major star.

As those Gang Green Faithful who regularly read this blog can attest to, I'm the guy who wrote a series of articles advising the Jets not to obtain an aging Brett Favre, then had to eat a heaping portion of crow when the blockbuster deal was announced.

My main objection to the trade was that I didn't want the team to surrender a high draft pick for a legend who was refusing to “go gentle into that good night” but instead, was intent upon signing up for one last shot at glory.  In hindsight, the fourth round pick that Favre ended up costing the team was something I could easily live with.

However, this time around, we're not talking about a 39 year old on his last legs.  Cutler is only 26, not yet in his prime and would cost a good deal more than a fourth rounder.

For what it's worth, new head coach Rex Ryan has not added much speculation to the story and seems to be content to let Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff battle it out for the job (with Clemens having the obvious advantage.)  There was no such feeling from former head coach Eric Mangini, who never seemed sold on Clemens as a starter.

Still, owner Woody Johnson does like to make his splash in the media.  Also, let's not forget, the Jets still have a ton of Personal Seat Licenses to seel to help pay for their new stadium.  Johnson may feel that the  “steak” he is serving to the fans requires a bit more “sizzle”.

Stay tuned.  We're not even into April yet.
