Quick Weekend Round-Up

First off, my apologies for very few blogs recently but the re-launch of the site has been my focus and small issues that we have been trying to resolve but now the site is close to where we want it to be!  Next, a huge thanks to the folks at Fox Sports Grill in Scottsdale, Arizona for giving our group a nice little spot in the restaurant so we could watch both Sens games on the weekend!

I have to start this blog off with giving Jason Spezza alot of credit for turning around his game during the Sens last 10 game stretch.  It has been by far and away his most consistent ten game segment of the season but his faceoff numbers could be better.  There have been too many times when the Sens have chasing the opposition for puck possession.  On this current six game road trip, the games in NY and Carolina, Spezza was very poor in the dot and Ottawa was lucky to get away with a win in one of those 2 games.  Regardless, Spezza has produced offensively and minimized his turnovers which is very nice to see.

The play of Nick Foligno and Ryan Shannon continues to progress each game out.  You know what you are going to get from these two players game in and out.  Foligno is playing with an added edge to his game which has made him even more dominant at times.  His driving to the net is something a few Sens players could add to their game.  Both players are making the most of their additional icetime.

Chris Campoli has been very disappointing the last half dozen games.  Head coach Cory Clouston has cut his icetime dramatically and just two games ago Campoli had less than 14 minutes of playing time.  At the same time, Brendan Bell has been promoted to the second pairing with Filip Kuba due to his very consistent play and at the expense of Campoli and Brian Lee's soft play.  Bell continues to produce offensively and consistently gets pucks to the net, something both Lee and Campoli are guilty of.  Even Clouston has made mention of this problem with both players in his postgame interviews.  Here is hoping Bell is rewarded with at least a one year contract extension with the Sens.  He has the best point production per game of any blueliner for Ottawa and his confidence continues to grow as he carries the puck up ice with authority while making smart decisions.

Brian Elliott earned his first career NHL shutout last night and showed management that he is capable of dealing with adversity.  After being pulled the night before, Elliott was strong positionally and didn't get caught wandering out of his goal the way he did in Atlanta.  It will be a great showdown between Elliott and recently acquired Pascal Leclaire next training camp for the starting position in goal.

Next up for Ottawa is the Florida Panthers tomorrow night and the six game road trip is capped with a visit to Boston the following night.

    From TSN.ca, here's some interesting stats which show how teams perform when players are in or out of the lineup for injury or whatever other reasons…G Brian Elliott15-5-3 (.717) in his decisions; 17-26-7 (.400) otherwise.D Filip Kuba3-8-1 (.292) when he's been hurt; 29-23-9 (.549) when he's played.RW Ryan Shannon16-24-7 (.415) when he's out; 16-7-3 (.673) since getting the call.D Brendan Bell9-15-5 (.397) when he's left out; 23-16-5 (.636) when he plays.D Anton Volchenkov5-7-2 (.429) when he's hurt; 27-24-8 (.525) when he plays.D Brian Lee11-13-5 (.466) when he's out; 21-18-5 (.534) when he's in.

Nice piece Kev. I couldn't agree more on Campoli. It makes you wonder if Murray has once again pulled off a bad move. Not to mention it comes off the eve of his former coach calling him a bad apple in the media. Bell's game has been very impressive for the last while. He's smart and has limited those mistakes he was making when trying to do too much.

Campoli another bad trade by Murray, does he even bother to do any scouting? Why would you pay a 1st rounder for a malcontent, who couldn't play on the 1st unit power play unit on the worst team in the NHL? I'm glad Clouston has turned things around, unfortunately it was too late. Murray could have packaged two 1st rounders to move up in the draft; instead we have another Picard/Lee and a draft pick that will take at least two years to develop. Hey Kevin, do you think playing with Alferderson and Spezza has caused Heatley’s development to stall? I never saw Heatley play for Atlanta, in the last Season or two he seems incapable of carrying the puck without turning it over, at the beginning of the Season he was said he wanted to learn how to kill penalties, I think I've seen him on 2 penalty kills this season. The foligno-Alferderson-Spezza power play unit, seems much stronger then the fisher-heatley-shannon. I know playing with a 3rd line center like Fisher, doesn’t help, but Heatley has to elevate the play of his line-mates, at the moment he hasn’t. Spezza seems to be thriving under the Clouston system. Spezza has learned to take advantage of his opportunities. In the past when Spezza had a good shooting opportunity he would pass it up. Spezza now shooting the puck and the result have been impressive, he's even cut down on his drop pass to the opposing team.

Great points Kev on Foligno and Shannon. Neil is non-exisent out there, please tell me why Murray didn't even get a 4th round pick for him. He really is useless. On Campoli, mike makes a great point on how the Sens could have packaged their first 2 picks and moved up in the draft. But that would make too much sense for Murray. This fool has Kuba, Picard, Lee and Bell that play the same role and then he trades for another soft player that isn't nearly as good as Bell on the PP or carrying the puck up ice.Murray should be fired! Not just because of the Campoli trade but numerous other stupid moves.

I think you answered your own question fish12. Neil is a giant liablity, he can’t score and his decision making with the puck is suspect. Tonight’s game at Florida is a prime example, his turnover lead to the directly to 4 minute minor that cost the Sens two games. Neil is -13 for a reason, it’s time to say goodbye to Neil, Bass can do his job for a fraction of the cost without the stupid penalties.

I wasn't always a believer in Bell but the last dozen games he has shown that he is more than capable of being a 5 or 6th dman on this team. He has shown more poise with the puck that Lee and Campoli combined. I like Bell playing with Kuba too. It goes to show you how Jason Smith isn't needed here. Trade him this summer!

Interesting that 4 of those players you mention are all call-ups. That says alot about the roster that started the year in Ottawa. Anybody see Mike Comrie lately? He has gone MIA since the flu bug hit him.

Outstanding points on Spezza. Now it looks like Spezza is the guy you keep and Heatley would be the guy you move. It is crystal clear that Heatley depends on Spezza more than Spezza needs Heatley. It is so true how Heatley has no ability at carrying the puck. Which is very sad considering your are playing at the NHL level and you should have some puck carrying skills but his are horrible!

Elliott pulled again……are you kidding me? 2nd time he is pulled in 3 games and I am going to guess he has been pulled 4 or 5 times already this year in only 25 games as a starter, that is unheard of.Sens 32 shots on goal, 19 missed shots on goal and 20 blocked shots, that tells you how much more Florida wanted this game. Way to go Ottawa, you rolled over for the Panthers nicely tonight.

Give the kid a chance… His initiation into the NHL has been “trial by fire” so to speak… I'm not suggesting the second last pick in a draft will clearly turn out good, but given a better situation, he might turn things around…

Regardless if the goals were his fault or not.

Seemed like he was dissing Elliott, who unfortunately has been put in a very difficult (yet somewhat pressure-free) situation.Oh well, season is officially a write-off for the Senators anyway… Just hope they don't do any more damage to themselves.
