DROP ON THE OIL: R.I.P 2008/2009 EDMONTON OILERS

I know they aren’t mathematically eliminated, but after last nights dismal performance I’ve officially singled down the large lady with massive wind pipes. The 2008/2009 Oilers are done.
A season that started with so much promise:
- Cole was going to revitalize the first line
- The kids were going to pick up where they left off
- Horcoff was going to continue his PPG pace
- Visnosky was going to give us the player we thought we had in Pitkanen
- Souray and Moreau were going to stay healthy and give the team toughness and vetran leadership
Ended with equally as much (or more) disappointment as the Oilers put up another “ok” performance on home ice, in what was the biggest game of the season. Last nights game was a good proxy for the 2008/2009 season as a whole – Flashes of brilliance, moments of good but not great, stretches of mediocrity and minutes of mass confusion. Once again the team tried for the big comeback with the clock winding down, eventually leading to the controversial call to check Temmu’s stick for an illegal curve.
To me personally the potential reward wasn’t worth the reward. Two minutes left and all the moment, the extra boost from the PP wouldn’t have offset the complete deflating affect of the PK. That said though, the team had 58 minutes to at least play the Ducks straight up….
One bright spot out of the game has to be the play of the fourth line, in limited ice time the Zach attack and JFJ looked great out there, throwing hits, creating energy and hemming the Ducks in their own zone. We all knew Stortini could do this, but it seems JFJ has now found his grove, if he’s able to maintain that effort and intensity over 82 games, he’ll have a prosperous career as a 4th line NHL’er.
