Habs call up Yannick Weber; Doug Janik sent down

I'd like to thank Bob Gainey for reading my blog and taking my suggestion to call up Yannick Weber. Or maybe he got the advice from now assistant coach Don Lever who coached Weber all year. I'm looking into it.

The Swiss native has already set a Bulldogs record with 10 powerplay goals this season. He turned heads in training camp, and he turned even more heads when he put on an impressive performance at the Bell Centre against Binghampton. He was briefly called up, played one game at forward (?), and was sent down. With the loss of Markov and Schneider it was clear that the Canadiens' powerplay was going to take a hit, and was it ever awful last night! Weber will likely play minimal even strength minutes, but he will get plenty of time on the PP. I project that Komisarek and Gorges will stay together on the first pairing, Hamrlik – O'Byrne and Brisebois – Weber will make up the rest of the defense. Ryan O'Byrne is lucky that Dandenault is doing a good job up front, because otherwise Dandy would probably drop back on D and O'Byrne would grab a seat in the press box.

Weber will not be an immediate cure for the powerplay, but he will help, that's for sure. Worst case, this is good practice for next year where he will likely have a regular role in the top 6 and on the PP. For those who don't know; Weber is 20 years old and played his junior hockey for the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL. In 2 years, Weber accumulated 96 points in 110 regular season games. His OHL career culminated with a championship in 2008, and his coach Peter Deboer (now with the Florida Panthers) claimed that Weber was the best defenseman in all of junior hockey. He was drafted by Montreal in the 3rd round of the 2007 entry draft, and has spent his first year of pro hockey in Hamilton. In 68 AHL games; Weber has scored 16 goals and has added 28 assists. He has the potential to be a 2nd pairing defenseman who gets a lot of time on the powerplay.
