81 Down 1 To Go

It was exactly six months ago that the Leafs opened up their season in Detroit with a triumphant win. Yadda, yadda, yadda, it’s April 9th and they have missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

What’s next? The World Championships for quite a few Leafs including Ron Wilson who will coach the American team. Luke Schenn could be on Canada’s blue line, perhaps being paired up with Drew Doughty in front of Marty Turco.

I fully expect that, six months from now that the Leafs will have 6 to 8 new players on this team and they won’t be of the samsonite (luggage) variety.

If history has taught us anything, Brian Burke is not a patient man. He’ll fix this team pretty quick starting at the draft.

What do you say about the 2008-09 Leafs? They were mediocre, not showing off, not falling behind. Their loss skid without a point this season was four games, which happened just once. Points were there for the taken, but since the invention of the shootout, the Leafs have left a plethora (word of the day) of points on the ice.

Best way to cure a crappy shootout team is to put together a good regulation team, write that down.

Leafs number one issue is a centre, they need a very good one. Hey, Mats Sundin is available. The way Sundin has played this season, his ship has sailed. No goals in his past 11 games at press time, he’s strug-a-ling as Joe Namath would say.

Do you drop $14 million on Henrik and Daniel, put them with Jason Blake. Might not be a bad idea, and outside of Toronto and Vancouver, who can else afford the two of them?

It’ll be interesting to see the summer moves in the big smoke, I wonder if Burke will be more smoke then fire. (how’s that for a segway, play on words?, A-)

Scott Clemmensen is also a free agent, look how well he matured after a season with the Marlies. And you can never have enough guys from Iowa in your organization, Radar O’Reilly is proof of that.

One and done for the Leafs, a battle of Ontario match-up. Might as well have it go to a shootout.
