With the tour of the Ontario teams under their belts the New Jersey Devils took 2 steps back against the Leafs but 1 step forward against the Senators to clinch the Atlantic Division title.
Toronto Maple Leafs @ New Jersey Devils
An inspired game with 48 shots saw Marty steal the show…… Marty Gerber that is…… The Toronto Maple Leafs scored 4 goals on 17 shots on……Marty Brodeur???? And Marty Gerber had 47 saves in a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils??? Maybe the Devils have not exercised those demons after all?? Grabvoski and Hamilton struck quickly from the 9:54 to the 11:13 mark of the 1st for the Leafs and they were off to the races and left after the 1st 3-0. Jamie Langenbrunner scored his career high 29th goal in the 2nd period only to have their rally fall short by a goal from John Mitchell at the 1:34 mark of the 3rd period and Gerber stood on his head the rest of the way. Christian Hanson yes Hanson and yes related scored his 1st career goal against Martin Brodeur in the 1st how’s that for putting on the foil
Toronto? With a rock solid effort with 48 shots the Devils will look to carry that momentum into Ottawa against the nothing to lose loose Senators.
New Jersey Devils @ Ottawa Senators
A lack lustre performance by both teams with spurts saw the Senators take a lead early in the 1st on a goal by Ruutu at the 4:13 mark. The Devils answered in a 46 span by goals by Gionta and Rolston in the 2nd period to take the lead. The Devils were handed a golden opportunity in the 3rd period when the Senators captain
Daniel Alfredsson took an interference call and added an unsportsmanlike penalty to hand the Devils a double minor power play. The Devils were unable to put the Senators away on this power play and the Senators kept their feet moving and on an absolute frenzy in front of the net in the final 2 minutes Danny Heatley found the back of the net and tied the game with 1minute remaining. Overtime saw the Devils with multiple chances but the game was sent to a shootout. Zach Parise absolutely undressed Alex Auld on the 1st shot. Daniel Alfredsson answered with a quick shot.
Brendan Shanahan hit top shelf and Marty preserved the win for the Devils. The Devils clinched the Atlantic Division Champion with this win and will end their season against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Prudential center on Saturday night.
Baby steps is what this team seems to be taking in trying to get out of this funk they have been in of late and with the playoffs looming they will need to shore up the powerplay and penalty kill and return to their killer instinct of 4 weeks ago in order to run deep this June.
