New Delivery for a New Delivery

Pirates stay in the division against the Reds for the holiday weekend, which sounds good on paper.

There is little that can match getting a division lead at any point in the season, and the chance to go up 2 or 3 games on the Reds is about all the Bucs can ask for.

Jeff Karstens will be trotting out to the mound tonight for the Buccos and he brings with him a new delivery with the hopes of erasing a dismal 2008 campaign where he went just 5-11 with a 4.89 ERA. According to Jennifer Langosch on MLB.com the new delivery is supposed to keep Karstens from moving too far ahead in his motion which has made him erratic.

Speaking with Langosch about the new delivery Karsten said [1]: “It felt not bad,” Karstens said. “It is still a little different, but it's not too uncomfortable. It feels normal for only doing it a couple times.”

It felt NOT bad? Even if it feels like dancing the tango on a stomach full of kidney beans, shouldn’t a fifth starter who made the rotation by beating out Virgil Vasquez (career 8.67 ERA) be a bit more psyched to begin the season? If I were Karsten’s (super) agent, I would instruct my client to answer all questions about his new delivery like this: “My delivery is sick. It is a thing of beauty. I have known on five separate occasions grown men to spontaneously break out into tears of joy over seeing my new delivery. And the Reds? Tell the Reds to expect dominance, brilliance, and oh yeah, a little bit of a whoopin’. God bless.”

Now THAT is how one answers questions regarding a new delivery.

The Reds must be licking their lips for tonight’s game. Especially when they take into consideration that the likes of Darnell McDonald is hitting .364 against Karsten in 11 at bats with a homer. Oh, think the Reds, if he thinks his delivery is “not too uncomfortable” just wait how uncomfortable we can make things.

Karsten is going to need some run support tonight with Cueto making his season debut for the Reds. Bucs are going to need a ton of Freddy Sanchez – .500 hitter against Cueto going into tonight – to get the game moving in the right direction.

And if the Pirates can do that, then they will have something to feel not bad about.
