The Los Angeles Dodgers took their first series of the season by taking two in a row at Arizona after dropping the first game.  They will host long time division rival the San Francisco Giants in the home opener at Chavez Ravine in an afternoon game at 1:10 today.

After James McDonald was unable to get through the 3rd inning on Friday night, the Dodgers got two wins from their starters on Saturday and Sunday.  After placing Hiroki Kuroda on the DL, starter Eric Stults, who was called up from triple-A, gave up one run and pitched into the 5th inning on Saturday.  Stults was helped by ex-Diamondback Orlando Hudson's 3 RBI's as the Dodger offense provided 11 runs.

On Sunday the Dodgers got 7 innnings from Randy Wolf, winning his first game of the season and Jonathan Broxton recorded his 3rd save of the season, Dodgers won 3-1. Los Angeles scored one of their runs of the rarely seen “4-out play.”  With Juan Pierre on 2nd and Ethier on 3rd with one out, Randy Wolf lined out to pitcher Dan Haren. Haren threw to his second basemen who tagged Pierre out for the double play, instead of stepping on the bag.  By not stepping on the bag, he allowed Ethier's run to count since he crossed home plate before the tag was applied.  Ethier had left third on contact, not tagging up.  Arizona could have appealed to third and that would have been the 4th out and the run would have been erased.  Arizona left the field without appealing, so the run counted.  Got it?

So far the Dodger pitching staff has been the strength, highlighted by the bullpen.  The Dodger offense figures to get more production from Russell Martin (.167 avg) and Andre Ethier who is hitting .208.  Of course we knew the pitching would be the least of their worries before the season stared.  We also do not want to place to much emphasis on the first week of the season.  A lot can happen with 155 games left.

In today's home opener, Chad Billingsley looks to win his second consecutive start of the season as the Dodgers will face first year Giant  Randy Johnson.  Johnson has a career record of 8-0 in Los Angeles.  Johnson's intensity should add another element to this divsion rivalry.
