Meatloaf was right

Where we examine how a washed up 70's power ballad rocker offers us insight into the first week of the Orioles 2009 campaign…

So we are one week in.  6 games against the Yankees and the (Debbil) Rays.  And we went 2 out of 3 against each of them.

2 out of 3 ain't bad.

ANY fan of this team, had they been offered the team winning the first two series against two teams that many pundits are picking to make it to or even win the World Series, would have accepted it gladly.  The sting of two bad losses while attempting to sweep notwithstanding, this is a positive week in a season that is not loaded with probable positives.

Jeremy Guthrie looks good.  Koji Uehara looks good.  Hell, Mark Hendrickson looks good right now (he usually does early in the season.  Hopefully Rich Hill will be ready to go before his summer swoon).  Adam Eaton is a place holder / inning eater for now, and Alfredo Simon is a wait and see, but he works for now.

The top 3 in the lineup (Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis) are batting a combined .382 with 26 hits, 12 RBIs, and (most important, IMHO) 19 runs scored.  They are getting on base and setting the table.

I do think there is going to be some change in the near future, especially to the roatation.  As soon as he is ready (he will get a minor league rehab assignment before he gets here) Rich Hill will either become the 4th starter or bump Simon to 4 and become the 3rd starter.  And after the cutoff for the major league service clock cuts off for counting this year (IIRC, it is May 15th or so), Brad Bergersen will be taking the 5th starter spot (or possibly the 4th, and Hendrickson moves to 5th / long reliever), and The Chosen One (Wieters) will be here to save us all.

**Public Service Announcement**

Do NOT look directly at Matt Wieters.  The sheer power of his glorious talent will blind you.  MAtt Wieters' tears are the most potent steroid ever.  Unfortunately he never cries.

(I will be looking for Matt Wieters memes as much as possible in order to put them here.   They amuse me to no end).

Now we are in Texas for 3 (don't expect a whole lot of 2-1 games here), then to Boston for a 4 game weekend showdown.  If we return home 4-3, I will consider this trip an unqualified success.

One series at a time, folks.  And enjoy the ride for as long as it is going.
