The Devils will be heading to my favourite USA city to battle the Solid and steady Carolina Hurricanes in a 1st round matchup of 2 Playoff tested teams.
The Devils stumbled down the stretch but managed to shore things up slightly in their final games winning 4 of 5 including their only win against Carolina on the last game of the season at the Prudential Center 3-2. Well if you listen to what I have been hearing so far about predictions you would think the Devils already have their bags packed for their summer vacations. The Carolina Hurricanes were red hot down the stretch and the New Jersey Devils were hung over since Martin Brodeur’s magical night when he eclipsed Patrick Roy. The Devils managed to win 4 out of their last 5 games but did not look as dominate as they did in the 9 out of 10 wins when Marty returned as they marched to the history books. Martin Brodeur stated on the Jim Rome show this afternoon that he was glad that the record was behind them now and that they are focused on the playoffs now.
Head to head these 2 teams are mirror images of each other.
Brodeur vs. Ward= Brodeur slight edge
Canes D vs. Devils D= Canes slight edge
Canes F vs. Devils F= Devils slight edge with the ZZ Pops line
Canes Special Teams vs Devils Special Teams= Canes
Cup rings and experience= Devils
So as you can see these teams are very well matched up The Canes possess heavy point shots which could be a key on the power play. The Devils would have to get the edge on overall grit and leaders in the room with the likes of Rolston, Shanahan, Holik, Langenbrunner, Brodeur, Elias, and Madden. Every game in this series is going to have one guy step up at one point and one play that makes a HUGE difference. The Canes have a 2-1 series advantage on the Devils and they have been the hotter team down the stretch, they also won the season series 3-1. So with all of this you would have to give the advantage to the Canes in this series, but that is why you play the games. Lou built this team to win now and the Devils have not gone more than 5 seasons without winning the Stanley Cup since they won their 1st in 1995. Sutter will rally this team and I as a fan and a writer have faith in
both these men to get the job done in this round.
Based on what has been built here and partly as a fan I am picking the Devils in 6.
The terrible thing about this match up is one of these teams will be gone in the 1st round!
