History Made at Dodger home opener

With all the attention in the offseason on whether the Dodgers were going to resign Manny Ramirez, Orlando Hudson sneaked in under the radar.

Well Hudson is not doing a good job of staying under the radar now, as he is the first player ever to hit for the cycle at Dodger Stadium at the home opener as the Dodgers crushed Randy Johnson and the Giants 11-1.

With Hudson hitting in front of Manny, he should continue to see good pitches, because pitchers would rather face Manny with no one on base. Orlando has 11 hits, hitting .333 and has stole 3 bases so far this season, has put away any questions about his injuries that have cost him games last season. Hudson signed an incentive-filled one year contract that guarantees the second basemen $3.4 million.  With the pitching the strength of the team, Hudson has added to an offense that is currently ranked first in the NL in runs with 43.

And oh yeah, Chad Billingsley pitched the opener for the Dodgers, was nothing less than spectacular with 7 innings, 11 strikouts, and 1 earned run. Chad, the 24 year old pitcher who had over 200 strikeouts last season, figures to ace this staff and his pitching will dictate how far the Dodgers go this season.  He can not get off to any better of a start, moving to 2-0 with a 2.08 era. He is also putting to rest any lingering effect of a broken leg in the offseason.

The loss for Randy Johnson, who never made it out of the 4th inning, giving up 7 runs, was his first loss at Dodger Stadium.

In what I call a “scheduling quirk” the Dodgers are off today before finishing the series with the Giants on Wednesday and Thursday and then the Rockies come to town for the weekend.
