08/09 The Year of The Bug

Well Stars fans I hate to say I told you so but with Marty Turco behind the pipes the Stars failed the test of time and missed the playoffs this season. Sure the Stars played some very solid hockey during parts of the 2008/08 season but this season will forever be the season of the injury bug and the fall of the once wonderful Marty Turco.
Injuries are the main reason this team will sit at home and watch tonight with the rest of us. Many people pointed to Sean Avery as the reason the Stars had a tough start to the season. I myself point to the fact they lost Morrow, Zubov, Lehtinen and Ott. Sure when Avery left the team got better for a good period of time but that to me was simply the team learning how to play without the players mentioned above and not anything to do with Avery. As the season rolled on the Stars looked like they could somehow manage without the 2 cogs of Morrow and Zubov but with other injuries and in particular the 2 broken wrists to Brad Richards the Stars eventually ran out of gas. What could be learned during this is the Stars have a ton of depth. To be able to fight as long as they did shows great promise. Also to me Brad Richards might be the most important player on that roster. Richards grew on me more and more as the season went on and the fall of the Stars can be directly tied to his wrists. Perhaps it was just the final straw but I think Richards makes this team tick.
Marty Turco was terrible. I picked on Marty all season long and for very good reason. Turco was 33-31-10 with a .898 save percentage, 2.81 goals against, and an amazing 3 shutouts. It is time for Marty to find a new home. Turco makes excuse after excuse without ever saying the real problem might be he is playing terrible. Turco can take his show off style right out of town if you ask me and I am sure you all knew I would mention this. Marty just flops around on the ice and hopes the puck hits him. Sure he is pretty good at playing the puck but he also badly screws up with the puck about once every game as well.
To end on a good note this Stars team showed plenty of promise. With the play of many young guys very much improved or showcased this season the Stars should be a much improved club next season. Daley, Neal, and Brunnstrom, and Eriksson are 4 players I expect will continue to grow and become very good NHL players. Hopeully we haven't seen the last of #9.
I will be back after the playoffs to talk about free agency, the draft, and possible trades until then you can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org
