Islanders retain #1 pick in upcoming draft

The losing season pays off as New York keeps the right to draft Tavares or Hedman

Islander fans everywhere are rejoicing today with the combined fervor of Christmas, the last day of school and Mardi Gras.  On June 26th, New York will have the option of picking any player in the draft in an attempt to help their fledgling team.

By popular consensus, the the pick boils down to two players:  Canada's lethal sniper John Tavares or Sweden's mammmoth defenseman Victor Hedman.

For those guys who don't follow hockey all that much, let me put the choice in a different perspective for you:

It's like having Anne Hathaway and Megan Fox in adjoining rooms, both of them ready, willing and able to rock your world.   You simply have to choose one.

It's THAT good.

However, the pick is so valuable and could fetch such a ransom that GM Garth Snow might look to drastically speed up his team's rebuilding process by trading the pick.  This option is not likely but certainly cannot be counted out.  By packaging the pick along with their second first rounder, they could conceivably fetch an absolute superstar.

Between now and the Draft, I will be highlighting different prospects the Islanders' coul select with either the first pick or with a later one if they choose to trade down.
