Just 10 games into the season I reveal to you the best part of the season, you may be surprised what it is.
Is it the patient offense which takes pitchers into deep counts which leads to the opposing starting pitcher making an early exit? No. How about the aforementioned which leads to the opposing team having to bring in their shakiest reliever? No.
Offense averaging over 6 walks per game? Nice, but that is not it.
Then it has to be the early play of Orland Hudson? Not quite.
The offense which ranks third in the NL with 68 runs all with Manny not having a home run before hitting 2 yesterday? I do not think so.
Then let's turn to pitching, is it Chad Billingsley being 3-0 while averaging 7 strikeouts per game? Clayton Kershaw's 1.50 era with 19 K's in just two starts? Neither of these.
How about Jonathan Broxton's performance this year, highlighted by the 5 out save Friday night, 4 of them coming via strikeout?
The set up man Ronald Belisario's average of over 12K's per 9 innings, 1.04 era?
Eric Stults being called up from Triple-A to win his first two starts?
Then it has to be the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 record, tied for first, 7 in a row? Close but no cigar.
If you ask me it is the fact that the Dodgers have opened up with 4 straight series against teams in the division. The point is to get to the playoffs and anything can happen, you do that by winning the division, or of course the wild card. So every time the Dodgers have won, they have handed a team in the division a loss. So this is more important than winning games against say the Mets. Some non-baseball fans say the season is too long and that the first few weeks are meaningless. Well these games are anything but, as last year the division was decided by only 2 games. The Dodgers of course have helped themselves by winning every series except for splitting the Padre opening series.
The Dodgers play the first non-division game of the year Tuesday at Houston. Go Blue.
