Game 4 was a story of 2 games and 2 teams controlling the way but in the end the Devils were 0.2 seconds away from another shot in overtime but 22 minutes does not beat 38 minutes of solid play.
Game 3 saw Travis Zajac finally get the giant monkey off the Devils back after previously going 0-5 vs. The Canes in overtime, off a beautiful rush by Zach Parise that Travis cashed in on. The Devils brought an uninspired effort to game 4 in the first 38 minutes of the game to be badly outshot and badly out played by the Carolina Hurricanes. They found themselves in a 3-0 hole with only a small ladder to climb out of it with, when Brian Gionta scored with 47 seconds left in the 2nd period to breathe life into a dead team off a beautiful feed up the middle by Mike Mottau. Brendan Shanahan cut the Canes lead to 1 with a goal at the 5 minute mark of the 3rd and the Devils were buzzing! David Clarkson tied the game and the Devils applied pressure but the Canes weathered the Devils storm until controversy erupted. Jussi Jokinen bumped and tipped in the game winning goal with 0.2 seconds left in the 3rd period to end a fantastic game with a horrible call. Rule 69.1 in the NHL rule book states a player may not bump a goalie at or around the crease area and if in doing so depending on the referee’s discretion may call a penalty or wave off any goal that occurred as a direct result of the play??? Hmmm goal came as a direct result of the play??? WHATEVER!! As a Devils fan I am quite upset and after seeing it over and over again it is evident to me that he bumped him and scored as a direct result of his actions. Non fans would probably say that Marty had time to reset himself as the ref saw it. Well no where in the rules does it mention that in 69.1 so I am a little puzzled by the call but not surprised given the antics and shananigans the REFS and the NHL have been going through already since these playoffs began. Just another log for the fire and there is nothing that can be done after the non call. The reality is this, the Devils and Hurricanes are tied at 2 which everyone called. The Devils came back from the dead and now have some fire burning in them to right their ship back at home. They did not lose this game tonight because of a bump and a goal at 0.2 seconds left. They lost because they were badly outplayed in the first 38 minutes of this game and did not do enough in those 38 minutes to deserve to win this game. They were badly out shot and to be honest I think the true reason Martin Brodeur was angry at the end of the game is because 2 out of the 4 goals he let in, he would like to have back plus he probably feels as though he let his team down tonight with his bad rebounds. The Devils showed some real courage tonight and need to build on that 3rd period and carry the play to the Canes in Game 5 on Thursday night. Never take a shift off and play to the final buzzer!! Let’s Go Devils!!!!
