Matt Capps Even!

If there are canons on this Pirate ship, then fire'em off.

This wasn't just a sweep for the Pirates against the “best team in baseball” – the 11-1 Marlins. This was historic. Today, the Bucs sit 3 games above .500, the first time since 2007 that they can claim this feat. And how did they get there in 2007? By winning their first three games of the season.

Not exactly setting the world on fire.

But this time around, the Bucs are making a statement. They won big against the Fish (8-0) they won close (3-2) and today they followed Adam LaRoche and his 4-5 performance to a – shall we call it medium? – win at 7-4.

We here in Pirates Planet have no problem giving a little love to Matt Capps. Yes, working as the Pirates closer since 2007 he has only 39 saves, but this season Capps has 5 saves in 5 chances and, probably even more telling, he is owned in 97.3% of ESPN fantasy leagues. 97.3%! That after ESPN labeled him pretty much a failure in their 2009 season outlook and wrote that “It stinks to be a Pirate closer”.

There's mud for your eye.

The fact that Capps was given the opportunity was made even more improbable by the fact that he got a save on a day when Maholm didn't have his best stuff. Maholm got the win, but it was good to see 7 different players, including Paul, record hits. The Buccos needed all of them today.

Maholm's ERA sits at 2.02.

Quickly so as not to dwell on the negative, but Doumit out for 8-10 weeks hurts. There. I said it.

Pirates .5 games out of first.
