Center Fielder Matt Kemp can really turn out to be a bargain for the Dodgers this year with his $467,000 salary.
24 year old Matt Kemp is off to a nice start this season in his fourth year in the MLB. Kemp is currently batting .364, and has 14 RBI's and an OBP of .410. Kemp has also shown some good speed stealing 4 bases thus far. Kemp should be able to put up versatile numbers, hitting for good power and stealing some bases for the Dodgers. Last year Kemp swiped 35 bases as he is showing his potential to join the 30-30 club.
Of course versatility is nothing new to Kemp, as he was a standout bakettball player and baseball player while attending high school in Oklahoma. You can also see it by the way he plays the outfield, evident when he injured himself in the 2007 season running into the outfield wall. Speaker of outfielders, Kemp was giving the ultimate CF comment by former manager Grady Little (he quit, not fired):
“The guy has the all-around game of Joe DiMaggio with the instant impact of Chipper Jones.”
Matt Kemp seems to have it together off the field as well. Kemp takes part in groups such as TACA (Talk About Curing Autism). Matt Kemp has a brother Carlton who is affected by this disorder. This is also evident in his 2008 launch of “Kemp's Kids” where basically kids from Boys and Girls clubs around LA receive food vouchers, tickets, etc.
With “The Bison” (nickname due to his size, speed) roaming center field, Matt Kemp should quickly erase Dodger fans' memory of the Andruw Jones era.
I will be back later this week as I give you the promised Joe Torre right place right time blog!
