Tony Gonzalez and wife to Atlanta

The Chiefs have traded future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Falcons [1] for a second round pick, according to Jay Glazer, who reports 98% of the stories that John Clayton confirms.

Comparing the trade to the Dolphins getting a 2nd rounder for Jason Taylor, who was two seasons away from winning AP Defensive Player of the Year and taken in the same draft, Kansas City should feel good about their return. In fact last year Gonzalez said “Nobody is going to trade a 2nd for a 32-year-old tight end, [2]” when he was frustrated with stalled trade talks under Carl Peterson.

Tight end immediately becomes a need position for the Chiefs, so if they make move down Pettigrew becomes a target.  Atlanta gets a true safety valve for their franchise quarterback, who only completed 19 passes to his tight ends [3] last season.  Atlanta G.M. Thomas Dimitroff made arguably the best signing in free agency in Michael Turner, had two of the top six or so picks in the first round in Matt Ryan and Sam Baker, and also stole Domonique Foxworth from the Broncos for a 7th round pick, so he's shown he's a three tool player at constructing a team.  Based on the guys calling the shots I expect the trade to work out for both sides.
