Restocking time: Patriots 2009 Draft Preview

For the New England Patriots the 2008 season was one many would like to soon forget. This past offseason saw the Patriots deal away veteran Mike Vrabel and Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a second round draft pick. And offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was sent to Denver to coach (destroy) the Broncos. The Patriots also lost Belichick’s right hand man, Scott Pioli to the Chiefs. So after all of the player and personnel turnover the Patriots are ready to get back to the field.

The next step in that process is this weekend with the NFL Draft, the Patriots have a plethora of picks, particularly early, to continue the youth movement of this club. In fact the Patriots have six picks within the first 97 this weekend, including three second round picks.

Here is a complete rundown of their picks:

Rd 1 Pick 23

Rd 2 Pick 2

Rd 2 Pick 15

Rd 2 Pick 26

Rd 3 Pick 25

Rd 3 Pick 33

Rd 4 Pick 24

Rd 5 Pick 34

Rd 6 Pick 26

Rd 6 Pick 34

Rd 7 Pick 25

I anticipate with their early picks the Patriots will look for help in the secondary. Too often last season the Patriots were victimized with deep balls. With that in mind I would expect a cover corner or a quick linebacker that fits the Patriots 3-4 to be given priority on Saturday. Once the defense has been addressed it would be safe to assume the Patriots will look for offensive and defensive players that will be higher on their board then perhaps other peoples. (Think Kevin O’Connell) A wide receiver or extended halfback depth would certainly not be out of the question. There have also been reports this Friday from Peter King of the Patriots potentially offering a package of their 1st round pick and a second round pick to move up towards the top 10. According to King he could see the Patriots targeting LSU’s DE Tyson Jackson, who projects well into a 3-4. If the Patriots can pull this off this sort of deal would make a lot of sense.

Should be an interesting weekend, be sure to join STB’s draft guru James Centifonti has he live blogs all the action from New York.
