Devils Get Caught in the Eye of the Storm

For the 1st time in this series the Carolina Hurricanes controlled the hockey game for the full 60 minutes, in front of a sold out RBC center to blow away the New Jersey Devils in the all important game 6 to force a game 7 in Newark on Tuesday Night.

The Devils did not have the sense of urgency the Carolina Hurricanes had and were badly outplayed and at one point were severely outshot 15-4, then 29-15 before they showed some life in the 3rd period to close the shots on goal to 37-28. Ray Whitney and Eric Staal provided the offense for the Canes with Staal tallying for 2.  The return of Jamie Langenbrunner to the line up did not supply the spark coach Sutter was looking for but if anything good can come out of him returning it is that he is now up to game speed for the all important game 7.

Cam Ward has truly been the story for the Canes this post season as he posted his 1st shutout of the series as the Canes 4-0 in front of 18680 Caniacs strong, who had been tailgating since 1 in the afternoon in anticipation of this do or die game.

The Devils big line of Zajac, Parise, and Langenbrunner have been shut down since game 3 but have played well through out this series. Brian Gionta is the only player that has contributed from the 2nd line which leads me to believe that Elias may not be right yet.  Brendan Shanahan has been consistent throughout the series and last night played his heart out only to be shut out by Ward.  John Madden has been fantastic on defense and face offs but has yet to tally on one of his timely goals like he has in playoff years past.  David Clarkson has supplied offense and grit that Devils fans have come to expect over the years from all of their players. Danius Zubruis has been a passenger and has been invisible except when he takes a bad penalty.  Brian Rolston needs to be bumped up to the 2nd line with Elias and Gionta to inject some life into him and Zubruis can play on the 4th line with Rupp and Clarkson. The D core has been consistent but gave up some glorious scoring opportunities to the Canes in Game 6, and quite frankly even though Brodeur had an EPIC game 5, he has been outplayed by Cam Ward in this series.

So this is what we have had in this series of everything so far so why not a game 7 to add to all of the drama.

Game 1 – Devils control game and win 4-1 easily (Devils have momentum)

Game 2 – Unlikely hero Tim Gleason scores in overtime to extend an overtime winning streak to 6-0. (Canes have momentum)

Game 3 – Devils snap their losing streak in Carolina and the dreaded overtime losing streak on a goal by Travis Zajac. (Devils grab the momentum back)

Game 4 – The Canes grab control with a 3-0 lead and look to put the game into cruise control until the Devils ROAR back only to lose a heartbreaker with 0.2 seconds remaining on a controversial play by Joni Pitkanen. (Canes look to have regained momentum)

Game 5 – An epic goaltending duel between Brodeur and Ward results in 85 shots and a 1-0 win for the Devils (Devils grab momentum and look to close out series)

Game 6 – The Canes blow out the Devils in a must win game.(look unbeatable and are full of momentum)

Game 7 – ???????

Win one, lose one, win one, lose one……… who has the momentum? Do the Devils have the advantage being at home? Have the Canes figured out what it takes to win with their lopsided win? Truly a series for the ages which I am sure not many have witnessed with all the pretty boy teams going at the same time! One more chapter to right tomorrow night at the Prudential Center and I repeat what I said at the beginning of this series… It will be horrible to see one of these 2 teams season be over tomorrow night. The Devils will have to dig deep one more time and find a way to preserve this season. Lou built this team to win now and with it being 6 years since Lord Stanley made its way to the swamp one has to think major shake up’s can come if the Devils falter again in the 1st round. I for one will be glued to the TV for every moment of this game 7 tomorrow night!!! Let’s Go Devils!!!!!!!!
