Celtics-Bulls: Too Much Fun

The Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls are putting on a show. Game 5 went into overtime…again, the 3rd overtime game of the series. This series is turning into a classic right before our eyes and it's only the first round of NBA playoffs.

The Bulls tied the series 2-2 on Sunday in double overtime. The Bulls hoped to carry the momentum to Boston for Game 5. Both teams looked tentative to start the first quarter. Neither team got in a rhythm offensively. At the end of the first quarter it was Boston 23 – Chicago 21.

The second quarter continued where the first left off. Both teams traded shots. Both teams traded defensive stops. Both teams would not back down. The first half ended with the Bulls holding a slight lead, Boston 44 – Chicago 47.

In the third quarter, the Bulls and Celtics continued to battle each other and make the other team earn every single point. At the end of the third quarter, the Bulls increased their lead by one point, Boston 66 – Chicago 70.

The real excitement started in the 4th quarter. The Bulls came out firing in the 4th quarter going on a 15-2 run. Ben Gordon, despite being injured, still managed to hit shots down the stretch and helped extend the Bulls lead to 11 points. However, the defending champions still had some fight in them. The Celtics got back in the game with their defense. Leading the way was Kendrick Perkins who finished the game with 16 points, 19 rebounds and 7 blocks.

Paul Pierce was quiet for most of the game, but when the Celtics needed him most he stepped up. Pierce made a layup to tie the game 91-91 with 1:13 left on the clock. The intensity in the Garden grew with every tick off of the clock. The Garden was rocking. Ben Gordon silenced the crowd with a 17 foot jumper to give the Bulls a 93-91 lead with 0:16. After a timeout, Rondo gave the ball to the Captain and Pierce drained a 15 footer to send the game into overtime. Are you kidding me?

Pierce took over the game in overtime hitting two jumpers on the same isolation play from the same spot on the floor to give the Celtics a 104-101 lead with 0:36. On the next possession, Tony Allen made an ill advised foul, fouling Ben Gordon while taking a 3 pointer, giving him a chance to tie the game. Gordon made all 3 fouls shots and the game was tied 104-104. The ball went to Pierce with the game on the line. Letting the clock run down Pierce made his move and drilled the game winner from 20 feet out. The Bulls still had a chance in the end when Brad Miller was fouled by Rondo. Miller went to the line and missed both shots, one intentionally. The Final was Boston 106 – Chicago 104. Paul Pierce finished the game with 26 points. The Celtics lead the series 3-2.

The Boston fan in me wants the Celtics to finish the job and win game 6. The basketball fan in me doesn't want this entertaining series to end. Game 6 will be at Chicago 7pm.
