Islander Draft Prospects: John Tavares

The New York Islanders hold the first pick in the NHL Rookie Draft in June.  Here is a look at some of the prospects they may be looking to select.

John Tavares….Center….6'0….195 lbs….Shoots Left….London Knights (OHL)

In 2007, Tavares broke the record for most goals scored in the OHL in a season by scoring 72, bypassing some guy named Wayne Gretzky.  In 2009, Tavares became the all time leading career goal scorer in OHL history by recording a total of 215.  He is universally acclaimed to be one of the most special hockey prospects to emerge in recent years, so much so that his talent has been described as “generational”.

Considering their scoring woes, the Islanders must have Tavares at the very top of their wish list.  He is deadly from just about anywhere in the offensive zone, but particularly down low.  He is known for his passion and his leadership ability.  He has improved his defensive prowess as well and continues to work on his skating, possibly the only weak point he has.

Why the Islanders should take him: A team as bereft of talent as the Islanders are cannot afford to pass on a player of Tavares' rare caliber.

Why the Islanders shouldpass on selecting him: The number one pick could fetch a king's ransom in a trade that would allow the team to address several different areas.

Chance that he'll be selected:  60%
