Cap Relief Comes Early

Posted By Dan Rakusan On May 4 2009 @ 2:24 pm In New York Rangers | 2 Comments

The New York Rangers won't have to wait until July to begin maneuvering for cap space, as several reports indicate Markus Naslund will retire from the NHL.  This move will leave the Rangers short a top-six forward, but will free up $4M in cap room for next season, as Naslund leaves with a year remaining on his current contract.

Naslund, who played 15 seasons in the NHL, managed only 46 points for the Rangers in his Broadway debut, making it 5 consecutive seasons that his production declined.

Clearly at 35 years of age, Naslund has lost enough of a step that it has reduced his effectiveness on the ice.

There is no word on whether or not Naslund will close out his professional hockey career in his native Sweden, or elsewhere in Europe.
