The 49ers manage to get standout receiver Crabtree at 10, will the gamble pay off? Other key San Fransisco draft picks in the mix
Draft day for the 49ers was a day that they knew they had to address their main need. An offensive force that can make an immediate impact. The team got just that and no one thought at pick #10, that the 49ers would end up with the best wide receiver in the draft Michael Crabtree. After the Oakland Raiders selected Heyward-Bey, it seemed possible that the 49ers may just get their guy.
Michael Crabtree was ranked the best receiver in the NFL draft, however his injury he suffered is what kept him out of the top five. The 49ers were the team in need of a big play wide reciever and took the gamble on the 6'3, 214 IB product out of Texas Tech. Crabtree put up big numbers in Texas Tech. He has 97 receptions for 1,165 yards and 19 touchdowns. It has been quite a while since the 49ers had a big play wide receiver, Brandon Lloyd never lived up to expectations a few years ago and he took an exit out of San Fransisco. Crabtree has these fans feeling differently though. His explosiveness when breaking away from the defenders and size makes him deadly from all perspectives on the field. All we can hope for is that Crabtree stays healthy for a solid rookie campaign. It looks like Shaun Hill will be starting for the 49ers this season, though many question if he will be the guy for the future. This could be an effect to Crabtree's production for the 49ers this upcoming season.
After trading away their second round pick, the 49ers next pick came in the 3rd round. Where they selected runningback Glen Coffee. This came as a surprise to many people with Frank Gore in the backfield and having Deshaun Foster taking some carries for Gore. Foster will be turning 30 years old and is on a two year contract. This is more of an in depth move by the 49ers. I think that it was a smart pick, Coffee looks like he could be a late round steal. Scouting reports say Coffee is a very solid, hard nosed back who is most effective on the screen pass. Having Coffee out there a few downs could take pressure off of QB Shaun Hill if he needs a quick dump pass. it will be interesting to see how the Niners will arrange their runningbacks this season. Although, it still should be Gore and Foster as the top two. That doesn't mean they can't include Coffee in to add a “three headed monster” such as the Giants had last season with Jacobs, Ward and Bradshaw.
The 49ers had two fifth round picks after some trading, the 49ers did not have any picks in the fourth round. They selected Pittsburgh linebacker Scott McKillop and Ball St. QB Nate Davis. It was predicted by many that at some point in the draft, San Fran had to go with a QB due to they are unsure of their future at the position. I don't know if Hill will be a full time starter year and and year out. We will have to see though, O'Sullivan was a big dissapointment last season.
Other draft notable:
6th round: Bear Pascoe – TE Fresno St.
7th round: Curtis Taylor – LB LSU
7th round: Ricky Jean-Francois DT LSU
