Smells Like Green Spirit

Paul Pierce had the ball in the last seconds of Game 4 with his team down by 1 point, 93-94. Everyone in the Amway Arena, on the sidelines and at home watching knew Pierce would take the last shot. The old Pierce takes the shot a 100 times out of 100. The old Pierce takes the shot even with 5 defenders on him and probably makes the shot half the time.
But this is a new Paul Pierce. This is a new Celtic era. This is the era of “Ubuntu”. Put the greater good of the team before the good of the individual.
So, with the game on the line Pierce found the open man, Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Davis drilled a 21 foot jumper at the buzzer for the win, Boston 95 – Orlando 94. Paul Pierce trusted his teammate to make the shot and Big Baby had the confidence to take it.
Davis made the biggest shot of his short career. He has really come into his own during the playoffs. Big Baby has stepped up when his team needed him most. Kevin Garnett and Leon Powe out for the playoffs, the Celtics have relied on Big Baby to fill their big shoes. He’s delivered. And now he can add hitting a playoff game winner to his resume.
I try not to play the “what if” game when it comes to sports. What if Davis missed the shot? What if KG was healthy? Moments like Big Baby’s game winner is what sports are all about. A whole playoff run comes to a handful of plays sometimes. P.J. Brown hitting a huge shot in last year’s post season against the Cavs. Brown hit the shot and the Celtics went on to win their 17th banner. David Roberts’s stolen base in game 4 against the Yankees. Tom Brady and the Tuck Rule. Big Baby’s shot might turn out to be one of those great Boston sports moments.
The Celtics are now tied with the Magic 2-2 and have regained home court advantage. Now it’s a three game series. Game 5 will be in Boston Tuesday night at 8 PM.
