Jets RB’s M.I.A for OTA’s

Both starters from last year are sitting out Organized Team Activities in an attempt to force the club to renegotiate their contracts
Here we go again.
Both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington have declined to come to spring OTA's as a protest over their current contracts and are demanding the team address their situations immediately.
Of the two, Washington is likely to be the one the team commits to. The diminutive game changer will turn 27 prior to the season and is currently being paid a bargain $535,000 a year. He is searching for a deal that would put him into the stratosphere of some of the most well paid RB's in the league, but he will almost certainly have to settle for less…and rightly so. While he has been productive (he has scored 20 times on limited touches over the last three years), Washington has never proven that he can be a lead running back in the NFL and, until he does so, will not be paid like one.
Jones, on the other hand, has been a starting running back for quite a few years…and that's part of the problem. He's 31 and, let's face it, most running backs do not have their best years that late in their careers. It's unfortunate for Jones, but the Jets can't be held responsible for the immutable laws of biology. He is due to make $1 million this year, but will probably be cut before next March when he is due a $3.5 million roster bonus. Seeing as how the contract was something he agreed to, it's hard to feel much sympathy for him.
Gang Green clearly anticipated Jones being a problem when they traded up to draft Iowa running back Shonn Greene in April. Jones needs to get with the program or he risks losing touches this year.
Funny…it just wouldn't the offseason without some NFL player crying about how little money he gets paid, would it?
