I honestly cannot remember the last time the Rangers swept a homestand, not that I'm complaining. I said last week that the weekend series against the Angels provided the Rangers with an opportunity to make a statement, and the team responded better than could have been expected. Outside of the 9th inning on Friday, the Rangers won a series of close games. The Angels had some unfortunate luck, including John Lackey's unfair ejection after just two pitches and Josh Hamiltons spectacular off the wall catch on Sunday. That being said, Texas was able to add three wins which is all that matters at the end of the day.
Starting tonight Texas heads to Detroit to take on the Tigers, who have won the last 8 games against the Rangers in Detroit. The team continues to play with a swagger of a first place team. It's important for them to approach each series as its own entity but the team is saying all of the right things. The team then heads to Houston for a weekend series with the Astros before coming back home for a three game series against the red-hot Yankees.
The team has been so consistant the past few weeks that there's not much to complain about. Cruz and Davis have had some ups and downs but the offense as a whole has been in top form, leading the league in SLG and near the top in all offensive statistics. The pitching has been superb and the staff continues to pitch late into games. The teams biggest weakness, the front half of its bullpen, continues to be a non-factor as long as the rotation pitches deep into games. The inevitable injury is liable to show up sooner or later, but you have Holland ready to slide into the rotation after getting his feet wet out of the pen.
My thoughts were that this team had a chance to make a strong push late in the season if they were able to hover around .500 in July. There are enough young arms in the high minors that should arrive before the end of the year. The strong start has allowed me to grow more comfortable with the talent that's already on the roster, and the young guys that should arrive over the summer only improves the club's chances to play meaningful baseball into September and October.
