Okay I was wrong a couple weeks ago about the Dodgers, they are better than I thought. I was right in one point that Joe Torre is the best possible manager for the Dodgers right now.
With the Dodgers sweeping the Mets in a three game set, the Dodger's lead is now 8.5 games over the Giants. Granted they missed Santana, and should have lost the first game as the Met's made 5 errors, including one that served up the game winning run. However the Dodgers did play Sunday on the east coast, and with no off day played the Met's on Monday, an 11 inning affair. Do not think that is hard because they are major league players,? Wrong, how tired do you feel after cross country flight? The Met's were already in CA, having played the Giants the series before.
The Dodgers are now 17-3 at home, tying the 20 game mark set by who? Yes, a Joe Torre led Yankee team in 1998. Those Yanks went on to set the then single season win mark and win the world series.
The Dodgers are getting timely everything. Hitting, the latest clutch job coming from Russell Martin, who was hitting .217 in his last seven games. He drove in Orlando Hudson, who continues to be red hot without Manny. Is there a better off season signing then the 2B?
The timely pitching came last night, although Jeff Weaver did not get the win, he only gave up one run through 5. Jeff in the last week has been involved in three games, relief in two, and last night's start.
The bullpen in the Met series, 10 innings 0 runs. Brent Leach, who took Kuroda's spot on the roster gets the timely win last night. Watching left handed hitters against Broxton looks unfair.
On Tuesday it was Casey Blake, last night Martin, simply put no easy out in this deep lineup which should carry them to the post season, especially in a bad division. With Billingsley your ace, if Kershaw can develop into a big game pitcher, add in a great closer the Dodgers could be dangerous in October.
It is now Los Angeles vs Los Angeles with the Angels coming to Chavez Ravine for the weekend, with some good pitching matchups, highlighted by Jered Weaver vs Kershaw on Friday then Matt Palmer, who has won all 5 starts, vs Billingsley Sunday afternoon. Add the Lakers to the mix and you have quite a sports weekend in the Southland. Hopefully the earthquakes will stop.
