Dre Bly adds depth to 49ers secondary

Last thursday, the 49ers reached a one year deal with cornerback Dre Bly. Bly used to be one of the top rated corners in the league and had a very good duo with Champ Bailey in Denver, but maybe a new environment in San Francisco will do him just fine. Sorry for not writing last week guys, been busy with exams coming up.
On Thursday May 21st, the 49ers reached a one year deal with cornerback Dre Bly. Over the past three seasons after leaving Detroit, Bly was signed by the Broncos to a 5 year/$33 million dollar deal. Why was this so significant? The Broncos signed Bly to have one of the best secondaries in the league with him and Bailey as their top two at cornerback. The whole Bly experiment did not work out as Shanahan hoped. What was also odd was the Broncos had one of the most dreadful defenses last season. Now, Bly will be on the other side of 49ers bright cornerback Nate Clements. Although Dre only had 2 picks and played all of last season, he had 62 tackles which a positive asset for a veteran cornerback to have. It is rare to find the physical cornerbacks who can get the tackles. Usually, in todays football any cornerback who can come up with the big interception are the popular ones. I grew up with this kind of football. But Bly's tackles will be needed on the Niners' defense no doubt.
“It was an opportunity for me to step in and have a chance to compete,” Bly said during his conference call with the Bay Area media. “At this point in my career, being successful like I’ve been, it’s not about money it’s about opportunity. It was the first opportunity for me to come in and compete.” Bly concluded. This is good news that Bly is coming in with a positive attitude and still appears to have his heart in the game. Clements seems fine with this move and looks forward to having his new partner. He has had a good resonse to it and is confident at being the teams #1 cornerback for the upcoming season. Clements and Bly are both veteran cornerbacks that can be reliable guys back on defense. This experience also makes for stronger leadership. If all the pieces of the puzzle fit, could the 49ers be favored making a playoff spot out of an NFC West that has been a weak division for years? It will lie mainly on how well the 49ers defense particularly in the secondary plays.
