Bruins extend Krejci

Bruins G.M. Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forward David Krejci to a multi-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Krejci established a career high in games played, goals, assists and points this season with 22-51=73 totals in 82 games. His 51 assists ranked him second on the team behind Marc Savard, and he led the NHL with a plus/minus rating of +36. In 2009, Krejci also received the Bruins Seventh Player Award, given to the player who performs above and beyond expectations.

The 23-year-old native of Sternberk, Czech Republic was originally drafted by the Bruins in the second round (63rd overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Bruins on January 30, 2007 against the Buffalo Sabres.

In his three-year NHL career, Krejci has recorded 28-72=100 totals in 144 regular season games. He appeared in all 11 playoff games for the Bruins this season contributing two goals and six assists.

I planned on putting something together for this month's draft but this is good news. It's a good move by the Bruins to sign him to an extension. How cap friendly the deal is remains to be seen. The answers will probably come out tomorrow in an expected press conference with Chiarelli and Krejci. Krejci is still expected to have surgery on his hip and miss close to 6 months.

The Bruins still have to make decisions with RFA's Phil Kessel, Matt Hunwick and Byron Bitz. Also, UFA's P.J. Axelsson, Mark Recchi, Stephan Yelle, Shane Hnidy and Steve Montador.

A brief thought or two for the RFA's & UFA's

Kessel – Can't help to think he will continue to develop into a premier goal scorer. He's only 21 and scored 36 goals in 08/09. Kessel still needs to have shoulder surgery that will keep him out close to 6 months as well.

Hunwick – Important for the Bruin backline. His development allowed the B's to deal Matt Lashoff to Tampa in the Mark Recchi deadline deal

Bitz – Solid 4th line player after January 10th callup. Played well in the playoffs even playing on the 2nd line for games 5, 6 and 7

UFA's
Axelsson – Does everything well except score goals. His $1.85M salary will have to be trimmed (possibly in half?) if he wants to stay in Boston for his whole career.

Yelle – Shawn Thornton says his presence made him a better, more complete hockey player this year. Excellent role player/penalty killer. Great faceoff man, especially in the defensive end.

Recchi – trade deadline arrival evjoyed his 2 months in a Boston uniform. Reportedly has told Peter Chiarelli he'd like to stay here for one more year. It will depend on the cap if he stays or not.

Hnidy – He's solid for a 5th or 6th d-man. Chips in an odd goal here and there. Personally, I like his style and hope he sticks around.

Montador – Bruins aquired him for his depth (bumping Hnidy) and with their injuries this spring, he and Hnidy were pressed into probably more action than both should have seen.

Enjoy Game 3 of the Cup Finals tonight.
