The Rest of the Story

And now . . . time for news!
The Nationals fired pitching Randy St. Claire because they're terrible and they're not quite ready to fire the manager. Give them a week.
St. Claire was with the organization for seven years, and in that time he accomplished some pretty good things for a pretty bad team. He turned around Livan Hernandez's career, giving us all years of slow, fat entertainment. He also turned Hector Carrasco's career around, but you probably all forgot who that is, if you ever knew in the first place. Don't worry about it.
Will it make a difference? No it will not. Read on to the next bolded part to find out why!
The Nationals have the worst defense in baseball, and they did it on purpose.
Adam Dunn, Cristian Guzman, Josh Willingham – when you bring these guys on board, you know what you're getting, and it's not a lot of leather. The center field situation is particularly telling. Lastings Milledge was the opening day starter, and he can't play center. He was replaced with Elijah Dukes, who's as bad at fielding in center as he is at personal relationships. When he got hurt, they gave the job to Justin Maxwell, who couldn't hit but was the first real CF we'd seen in there all year. So they sent Maxwell to the minors and put Dukes back in there, possibly after a death threat directed at management.
They can't field, and it's only going to get worse with catcher Jesus Flores possibly out for the season. Why is the pitching lousy? I'd suggest it has a lot more to do with this than it does with the late pitching coach.
This will remain a mystery, though, because no one's watching.
Last year we got a report that Nats games on TV were averaging . . . 9,000 viewers. Seriously. That's not a joke, and I didn't forget any zeroes. 9,000. This year things have improved all the way to 12,000. I'm being sarcastic here, because going from 9,000 to 12,000 isn't a real improvement – it's a damn rounding error.
We're still last, and it's not close (the whole list is here – pretty interesting). Are there any more coaches we can fire? That oughta help.
