The Drew Storen Era Begins

The wait is over!

That went a lot more smoothly than I expected: the Nationals have signed their first round draft pick [1], mere hours after selecting him.  Stanford righty reliever Drew Storen is the future, and the future is now, and now has never been closer to the past.  Think about that.

The Nats, however, actually had two first round picks thanks to the nifty combination of being terrible at baseball and being terrible at signing baseball players.  Their first pick was cashed in for the rights to San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg.  Maybe you heard about this.

So draft day itself didn't have any surprises: they picked Strasburg and then went cheap with the rest of their picks.  The interesting part starts . . . now! Can they get this guy signed?  And if they do, will they get any work out of him before his arm falls off?

My official prediction: Strasburg signs.  The bonus is going to set a record, but the ownership – a motley collection of incompetents most of whom happen to have the same last name – is going to grit its collective teeth and fork it over.  They have to.  Every single event in the recent history of the Washington Nationals has served to make the team a laughingstock.  They failed to sign last year's first round pick, they lost a hundred games, they spelled their jerseys wrong, and they recently showered DC's fire chief with spent explosives [2].

$20 million is worth saving a baseball franchise, and even the dimwits running the Nationals realize that.
