The Predators decided to go for another defenseman with a big shot, Ryan Ellis with the 11th overall pick in the draft.
This will be a puzzling pick for the Preds fans as the organization is very rich in defensemen and lacks any scoring power up front.
I like the pick because this kid is a puck moving defenseman and with all the Preds strength on defense they don't really have a puck mover to open up the ice other than Ryan Suter and he isn't going to remind anyone of Brian Leetch anytime soon.
The Preds then went with Zach Budish at 41, a 6'3″ 229 pound High School kid from Minnesota who missed his entire senior year with a knee injury suffered while playing football. This might be the key pick of this draft. It Budish didn't get hurt he may have well been a top 15 guy in this draft.
The Preds went with another defenseman at 42 with the Selection of Olivier Roussel of QMJHL Shawinigan. The then selected two players from Guelph in the OHL with 70 and 72, Taylor Beck a LW and Michael Latta a Center. Next up was Craig Smith a Center from Waterloo of the USHL at 98 and Mattias Ekholm a defenseman from the Swedish Junior league at 102.
Nick Oliver (C) at 110, Gabriel Bourque (LW) at 132 and Cameron Reid (C) at 192 rounded out the 10 picks for Nashville.
This is an interesting draft and time will tell as to whether the Preds made any giant leaps here. When you live at the bottom of the cap like the Preds do, you wonder if the Ellis pick is to replace Shea Weber in 3 years if they can't sign him long term and not to compliment a young strong defense for a cup run in 2010 or 2011.
No action on the free agency market at this point from the Preds.
Talk to you soon.
