The Boston Celtics are in serious talks with free agent Rasheed Wallace. The Boston Globe is reporting that Celtics' owner Wyc Grousbeck, GM Danny Ainge, head coach Doc Rivers, and the Big 3, all met with Rasheed in Detriot on Thursday trying to convince him to come to Boston. The Boston Herald is reporting the Celtics offered Wallace a two year contract, 5.8 million a year.
Rasheed would be a perfect fit for the Celtics. The 6' 11″ Center/PF gives the Celtics a great “go to” guy coming off the bench. Will Rasheed accept being a 6th man after being a starter is whole career is a big question. The Celtics already know he might have second thoughts about coming off the bench. So what did they do…sent the heavy hitters, Coach Rivers, KG, Pierce, Allen, to explain how he will fit into their team.
I don't want to get ahead of myself dreaming of Rasheed in green and the possiblities. Rasheed is a big man that can shoot from the outside. Rasheed gives Coach Rivers options. He could have the option to send Rasheed in to give Kendrick Perkins or KG a rest. Rivers could go big having all three on the court at once. If the Celts need some offense, Rivers could have Rasheed and KG on the court at the same time. Options. Something Rivers didn't have in 2009 playoffs.
Everyone knows about Rasheed's emotions getting the best of him. No doubt he will be called for technical fouls. But, what's wrong with emotion? I won't emotional guys on my team. KG is a great example of this. The day he came to Boston was the day that everything changed. KG brought an infectious love and intensity for the game to Boston. Rasheed is a similar player. Rasheed has a bad reputation of taking games off, but I don't believe in those reports. I've watched Rasheed step up his game in playoffs. He was the missing piece for Detroit and helped them win a championship. When a guy raises his game when it matters most, it shows me he cares, he doesn't mail it in. He wants to win. The Celtics want to win.
In order to win a NBA championship, the Celtics will have to get through teams like the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs added Shaq. The Magic added Vince Carter. Things just got harder for the Celtics in the Eastern Conference. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I want Rasheed to come to Boston. There are other teams going after Wallace though.
Look at the possible lineup. KG, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, Perk and Sheed coming off the bench. Sounds like a championship team to me. Come on Rasheed. Come to Boston and help the Celts bring home banner number 18.
