Alexei Kovalev signs in Ottawa/Heatley to Columbus VERY CLOSE/Sens management shake up coming?

Ottawa has finally dipped into the free agent market signing former Habs winger Alexei Kovalev to a 2 year contract worth 9-10 million.  More details to come on terms of the deal.

UPDATE at 940pm EST – I was told in passing yesterrday that the Columbus Blue Jackets could be a team interested in Heatley. It appears now that all remains for this deal to be completed is for Heatley to give his almighty blessing. Will he or won't he waive his NTC? Derick Brassard and Nikita Filitov would definitely be coming back to Ottawa and the name of Kristian Huselius has come up as well. His 4.75 million cap hit might have to be included for Columbus to bite on this deal. I was also told that the Dallas Stars were getting serious on acquiring Heatley but that Brad Richards had to waive his NTC. James Neal could also be part of a Stars packages if they were to acquire Heatley.

In Sens management news, expect the announcement of Chris Schwarz the new conditioning coach and Dominique Nicoletta to be the new assistant therapist with the Ottawa Senators for the upcoming season by tomorrow. He will be promoted from his head position in Bingo.

Other rumblings with Sens upper management has to do with Asst. GM Tim Murray. Management in both Ottawa and Binghamton are extremely frustrated with Tim Murray and his lack of leadership. Murray went out of his way to say that he would be down in Binghamton to oversee player developement, etc…but he only showed his face twice all year with one of those visits being with Uncle Bryan Murray. That sort of incompetence can't be tolerated by either franchise along with a few other problems that occurred with the younger Murray during the season. His comments on XM Radio late in the season weren't received well by many in the organization when he said he didn't care if the Baby Sens made the playoffs. More to come on all of this plus a development camp breakdown in my blog tomorrow.>

The signing of Kovalev is definitely a sign of other things to come in Sens land.  Regardless, I think Sens GM Bryan Murray will be regretting this signing at this time next summer, just as he is regretting the terrible signing of Jason Smith. Murray makes too many panic moves and this is another one of those.

Look for Bryan Murray to move 3 contracts on defense over the course of the summer.  Jason Smith, Alex Picard and Christoph Schubert will almost certainly not be back with the club when the open training in September.  Naturally alot of the movement on defense will be determined after Heatley is moved.

It is doubtful that Heatley ends up in Edmonton at this point.  First off, how do you sell Heatley to your fans after he spurned your team a few times?  Secondly, if you are upper management, why would you continue to go after a player with deep character problems and with his refusal to play in Edmonton, who knows if he will ever be happy with the Oilers?  That is why at this point in time Colorado and Dallas are in play on Heatley. Plus Dallas is willing to trade Brad Richards for Heatley.

I will be back tomorrow with detailed analysis from the Sens development camp and a detailed story on Heatley and what went down with the possible NY Rangers trade.

So it is said it's a two-year $10 million, which is still fine depending on how many nights Kovy shows up. Kev, I keep hearing that Smith may spend most of the year on the IR anyway, so his salary will come off the books. Also, have you heard any rumblings of Meatley going to Phoenix? Can't Picard just get sent down to the minors?

Picard is on a one way deal so if they do so he would be claimed by some team and be lost for nothing.Jason Smith……..he could potentially spend the season on IR but from all accounts he completely intends on playing this year…..so something needs to be done with his contract.

Auld has just been traded to Dallas.

The moment “The Monster” signed in TO you had to know Dallas was going to acquire a vet as a back-up to Turco. Thankfully Auld's contract is off the books now!

If the Sens get that kind of package from the blue jackets they should go jumping in the streets.

It would be 2 of the 3 players that I mentioned as per my article…….Huselieus is a dog so really they would be getting one quality young player in return for Heatley, not really a deal to be jumping in the streets about.

I actually like the Kovalev signing. I realize that he doesn't show up for every game, but haveing Spezza passing him the puck will be huge, and he is great in the playoffs. I cannot see him hurting this team.As for Heatley, we HAVE to find a way to get rid of him. If we can get a deal for Marleau, or Richards, or even with Edmonton, then we are laughing, but regardless we need to get rid of him before he becomes more of a cancer.

Lee, the Sens don’t need to get rid of Heatley at all cost. Waiting can have its benefits Spezza and Chara for Yashin come to mind. Heatley will want to make the Olympic team this year and he will bring his “A” game this fall. There’s no evidence that Heatley is a negative presence in the dressing room like Emery was. Though displeased at his reduced playing time, he didn’t show it, so his trade request came as surprise to everyone. He’s playing hardball right now and with a GM as clueless as Murray it’s easy to see why. I don’t like the approach he and his agents are using but trading him at a discount ensures the Sens will continue along the same path as the Leafs, too mediocre to win big, but to good to claim a good draft pick. Hopefully Murray will be let go before the season starts, he’s a good coach with an eye for drafting young talent, but he can’t trade or negotiate, the two skills most needed in the salary cap era.Having Murray fired would be so nice but Melnyk strusts this guy far too much otherwise he wouldn't have given more responbility and and a new title on top of his GM role.

He was grilled about it on the Team 1200 pretty bad and they had every right to considering the idiotic ME comments that he demonstrated.

Sounds like he never grew up and that he was one of the few guys who still kept in touch with Ray or hung out with him when he came back to town. Bad combo. We all know how the Ray saga ended.

what are you reading? He clearly states in his reply to Jamie Van Du that he would be claimed if Picard was sent down. Guess you are the one looking foolish for the stupid comment, not Kevin.
