Dany Heatley Update(4pm EST)/Phoenix Coyotes and NY Rangers tidbits

The Dany Heatley saga has taken on a new twist today.

In a few NHL circles, people are saying that Heatley is being forced by both the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers to make a decision about waiving his no-trade clause over the course of the next day.  Look, at this point he ain't going to Edmonton otherwise it would have been done by now.  The longer this whole scenario has gone on, the less likely that the Oilers would even want this guy on their team.  Why would you want a selfish jerk on your team if you are Oilers management?  How do you sell Heatley to your fans and most of all your loyal season ticket holders?  The guy has flat out refused on more than one occasion that he doesn't want to play in Edmonton so how could management or even Heatley spin it to show everyone that he genuinely wants to be in Edmonton?  I am sure everyone, including myself that the Oilers rumours would just end at this point.

As first reported here back before the NHL Entry Draft, the NY Rangers deal to land Heatley was 95% done and everyone involved thought it was done.  That was until Sens GM Bryan Murray tried to get more out of the Rangers for Heatley.  He went against the “code” and released the names of the potential deal with Edmonton hoping to use it as leverage against the Rangers.  Unfortunately for Mr. Murray, he messed up BIG time and Rangers GM Glen Sather pulled his deal off the table and said he wouldn't pursue the high priced winger anymore out of principle due to what Murray had done to the Oilers.  It's no surprise that Sather's ties to the Oilers organization had alot to do with it.  Sather didn't want to see longtime friend Kevin Lowe get burned, nor did he like to see Oilers management have to deal with Murray's shady tactics.  At some point, the Rangers might get desperate again and jump back into the Heatley sweepstakes.  They originally offered defensemen Ryan McDonagh who Ottawa asked for before the Gomez deal was completed along Ryan Callahan and Michael Del Zotto. NY recently signed Callahan to a new contract but had held out hoping he would be Ottawa and the Sens would get a new deal done at that point for him. As well, it would take nothing for the Rangers to bury Wade Redden's contract in the AHL with their affiliate in Hartford.  This has been talked about quite alot over the past few weeks with Rangers management due to…….surprise Sens fans….Redden's poor play.

Teams that are interested in Heatley's services and have the necessary cap space are the Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets.  Both teams have talked to Murray on numerous occasions and as I stated here in a blog two weeks ago, Dallas could be the darkhorse in the Heatley chase.  I have been told by numerous sources that they would be extremely surprised if San Jose could make the necessary moves to bring in Heatley's contract.  Meanwhile, the Stars would like to keep Brad Richards and not have to include him in any deal.  James Neal would be the focal point of any deal involving Dallas, while Derek Brassard is the player the Sens covet if they were to swing a deal with Columbus.  Don't kid yourself on the Jackets, GM Scott Howsen has told Rick Nash he will do everything possible to get his Team Canada linemate in a Jackets uniform.

Staying with the Rangers, again….as first reported back here on June 26th, NY wants to walk away from Nikolai Zherdev.  He has gone to arbitration and once the arbitrator comes back with a contract number, at that time the Rangers will not accept the ruling, therefore making him an unrestricted free agent.  Watch for the Oilers to make a push for Zherdev.  Lastly in NY, Derek Morris will be looking for a new team as there is no interest in bringing him back to the Big Apple.

New York will once again make a push for Phoenix Coyotes defensemen Ed Jovanovksi.  He has two years left on his deal and has a no-trade clause.  Even though Jovo built a new house in Scottsdale a little over a year ago, NY is the one team he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause for.

The Rangers are interested in the services of Sens free-agent defensemen Brendan Bell along with the LA Kings. Both teams are making a big push for Bell's services.  Bell would want a one-way deal and could help either team on both the powerplay and bring some solid depth on the blueline.  Here is hoping Bell winds up in a great situation for the coming season.

With regards to the Coyotes off the ice, having Darren Pang leave the team on the TV side of things to sign in St. Louis as their new colour analyst, it has me wondering if head coach Wayne Gretzky will be back.  Gretzky and Pang are very close, so with this move one has to wonder if Pang knows a thing or two about Gretzky's future in Phoenix.  I highly doubt Pang would have left Phoenix if he knew Gretzky would be returning.  As well, Pang was extremely happy working with Ed Strader on the Coyotes telecasts.  It could clear the way for former Coyote Tyson Nash to take on those colour analyst duties.

I apologize for not getting the Sens development camp player evaluation's up last week.  I will do so in the next 48 hours in my next blog.  If anything breaks between now and then on Heatley, I will be sure to be back with an update on anything I am hearing.

Big surprise, Murray is an idiot as a GM. It is being reported in other places of the bullshit he pulled with his fellow GM's. This guy was maybe the best coach this team has ever had but when it comes to his GM duties, the guy is a joke! That Rangers package looks fine to me. But no he had to play hard ball the worst way possible and now many GM's don't trust him at all. The guy is a fool!

Good to hear about Bell. He played well near the end of the year in Ottawa and showed he can play in the league.

It’s time Melynk face the facts, Murray isn’t a good GM. Heatley made the trade request early enough that the Sens should have traded him to any team offering a deal where they didn’t need to pick up salary. They could have signed his replacement on July 1st instead they sat on the sidelines. The collapse in the Sens play over the last few years was clearly not the work of one player, though Murray and the media seemed to think everything would be fine once Emery departed. Heatley is a selfish player, why Murray expected him to except a deal that would benefit the Senators is a mystery to me. Spezza looks like he might be salvagable, his comments to the media latley suggest he's starting to take his job more seriously.

I'm telling you, there is ZERO chance Heatley ends up a Ranger unless the Sens take Redden back. He's half the player Roszival is, and costs more money. That doesn't say much about Rozzy, but certainly tells you all you need to know about how Rangers fans (and likely management) feel about his contract, which was likely signed at a 20 martini luncheon by Glen “I'm still living off my Cup rings in Edmonton” Sather. As for any other potential Zherdev suitors, I've read a lot around the net about Minnesota looking into things. Finally, the player from Columbus would be BRASSARD, not BROUSSARD. Apparently that wouldn't be enough for the Senators, according to more than one report around town here in Ottawa, but I believe he would be a good starting point for a trade.Either way, Heatley shouldn't be allowed to participate in the Olympic camp in August unless he drops a bit of ego between now and then. Personally I cheer for the Czechs, but I thought playing for your nation was an honour EARNED, not given. Heatley needs to get his head out of his anus and see how pathetic he's become…

Love reading the comments on this blog. Murray is an idiot? Hahahha. Murray is a better then average GM. He knows talent and has an excellent reputation for finding it. That cannot be disputed.Did he try to squeeze Sather? Probably…..but Sather and most other GMs are definitely trying to put the squeeze on Murray. That Rangers package is JUNK and the why the hell is Dubinsky a deal breaker? They guy is good but will never be an all-star caliber player. NEVER. IMO Sather is the guy that blew it here. He could have had an all-star LW and instead he throws a long term deal at a guy who will never make it to the end of his contract. What a dope.Kings messed up too….Ryan Smyth? Good Luck with that Hextall. Prediction: If Murray doesn't get a decent offer Heater is at camp and Murray calls everyone's bluff. Stubborn old bastard. God Love Him.

If you can tell me 3 trades that Murray has pulled off in which he won then I won't say he is an idiot. All the NTC and NMC he handed out, the terrible free agent signings, you name it Murray has screwed up this team nicely.

Picard, Kuba and a 1st for Meszaros – Kuba alone had more points than Meszaros last year.2. Leclaire and a second for Vermette – Vermette was a third liner at best – Murray turned him into a #1 goalie and a draft pick.3. Donovan for Schaefer -Sure, Donovan isn't that great but Schaefer isn't even in the NHL anymore.4. Shannon for Nycholat – Shannon's would've gotten over 40 pts if he'd played the whole season – Nycholat's in the minors.Muckler is the one who screwed this team up – he chose Redden over Chara, traded Havlat for a bag of hockey pucks and consistently traded our draft picks (four second rounders) and prospects for rent-a-players at the trade deadline. Muckler traded Brooks Laich AND a second round pick for a washed up Peter Bondra. Bondra didn't get a point in the playoffs and immediately left Ottawa. Brooks Laich? He just put up 53 pts with the Caps last year – I sure wish we still had him.Sure, Murray's made some mistakes – the Corvo trade, the NMC's and overpaying Fisher, Neil and Kelly, signing Jason Smith – but he's not the reason the team sucks right now. Muckler is.

At times in the later part of the season, there were nights where Bell was the Sens best defensemen and then there were nights where he wasnt good at all, but that the problem with many on defense last year.Still, I really liked what Bell brought to the team and he outperformed Picard and Campoli who were thought to be the future on the blueline when it came to quarterbacking the PP. Both of them were a joke!

You nailed it Mike. How on earth did Murray not get a trade done before the draft or even at the draft? Murray screwed this up, not Heatley now. He had teams tender offers that were as good as he was going to get and Murray had to know this would happen with Heatley. He had to know teams were not going to give too much, he even stated that himself when it first happened and how Heatley has hurt their negotiating.

I agree that Sather took an awful chance on Gaborik but in no way can Murray get off the hook on this one. He flat out blew it not getting a deal done when he could have. Had Murray got a deal done before July 1st then he could have used the extra money saved with Heatley and gone after other aspects to help improve the hockey club.

He should have been a Ranger now, 4 outlets have stated this and even the Rangers went on record as saying to MSG Network that they thought they had a deal in place for Heately. Sure it is easy to say he won't be a Ranger after all that has happened, but he should have been a Ranger weeks ago.It would be nice to see Heatley not get moved prior to the Olympic camp so then he would have to face the music and all the Canadian hockey fans at the camp in August. It is time for Heatley to come and say something for crying out loud. What a joke this guy is!

Speculating about a potential deal is totally different than a deal having taken place. I fail to see how the Edmonton offer wasn't better than the Rangers' one, since clearly M. Staal wasn't at all involved in it.Glad Heatley isn't a Ranger, and wish he'd just go to the KHL. One-trick pony who has an ego far bigger than his skill-set.

He will never be a 2 way player but his is still a plus player over his career and is definitely not a liability on defence. Heater will be an all-star for years to come thanks to his ridiculous shot and play-making. You don't have to like him to acknowledge how good the guy is….see Terrell Owens for more on that.

He can't back-check because he's slow. He's a cherry picker in the offensive zone, always lurking in the high slot waiting for Spezza or Alfie to get him the puck.Look, I'm not suggesting he is a BAD player, but he's got plenty of shortcomings. Plus, he's lazy.

That is odd, why did XM radio confirm this story along with The Score in Canada. You are the one feeling the burn because you must be jealous that you aren't talking to the same people Kevin and the others have been.
