Where will you be on January 1, 2010?
I hope to see you at Fenway Park for the Bruins vs. Flyers game. A quick personal note. I was fortunate to have covered over 25 Bruin home games last season. With a little luck, I'm hoping to be there for at least that many this season, especially the Winter Classic on January 1 at Fenway Park.
As Gary Bettman said today, this event ha s become the “worst kept secret” in the sports world. Bruins owner, Jeremy Jacobs, was obviously thrilled to be co-hosting the game with the Red Sox ownership group. ”Landing the Winter Classic here is something that we have worked hard to achieve for our fans for quite some time. Boston has been home to our fair share of great sports moment and, on New Year's Day, we'll be adding another indelible memory to that long list.”
As most fans know, this will be the fourth outdoor regular season NHL game played. In 2003 the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens but then labor issues halted the event. After the season long lockout, the league started up the outdoor contests in 2008. The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rich Stadium and this year the Black Hawks hosted the Red Wings from Chicago's Wrigley Field. A couple trends that stand out here. First the home team has never won the outdoor game and second, the last two winners both played in the Stanley Cup Finals the season they won their game. Unfortunately, the teams lost the Cup Finals (Pittsburgh in 2008 & Detroit in 2009)
The NHl also released it's full schedule today. Right off the top, the Bruins host the Washington Capitals on October 1…only 78 days until the B's are back!
