Pondering the Future

What does the immediate and distant future hold for a Colts team that has been near the top for so long?

In the sports world, it is sometimes very easy to get comfortable in the way we view a team. We have a pre-conceived notion of teams and perhaps those are some of the reasons why every year the ‘prognosticators’ will usually pick the same two finalists of their respective leagues to return to the championship; if a team is good one year and they keep the same core, what is preventing them from being the same the next season? I understand the logic; however, as we live in a cyclical world, everything must rise and fall and for the most part your team goes from top of the heap to basement dwellers (unless you are a lions fan in which case you have probably set up a pretty sweet pad in the basement and have even been bold enough to do some renovation down there to make it more comfort; mine as well, you live there).

Our memories are short and so it is easy for us to forget that at some point the Red Wings were year after year a mediocre team before they began their cup runs of the 90’s and 2000’s; does anyone remember Raiders vs Buccaneers Super Bowl? At the time I am sure people were sure the Raiders would continue to be a great team the following years and….well you all know the rest.

What is the point of all this? Good question. Sometimes I am not too sure where I am going with my thoughts but today I do have a basis for the verbosity. There is going to be some point when the Colts will fall down; last season we saw them lose the division for the first time in 5 seasons and Manning fought with his first real injury. Sure the Colts made the playoffs but it wasn’t as easy as it used to be and there was a time when it seemed very much in doubt. This begs the question: How much time do the Colts have as a top team? With a core that is generally young but a Quarterback who is soon to be entering his mid 30’s. I guess the obvious answer is the Colts will go only as far as Peyton can carry them. I have no doubt that a Colts team without Manning would be bottom of the barrel; there is a reason this guy won his third MVP last year. His stats were nowhere near where they used to be but some say it was his gutsiest year fighting off a knee injury to essentially carry the Colts into the playoffs.

How many good years do YOU think the Colts have left? When will they miss the playoffs?
