Yanks on top with 2 months left

After an A-rod-less first month of the season, the New York Yankees have battled their way to the top of the AL East standings with a little over two months left of baseball to play.

Since the All Star break two weeks ago, the Bronx Bombers are 10-2 putting them not only in first amongst AL East teams, but they now own the second best record in the Majors sitting only one game behind the National League's Los Angeles Dodgers (62-38).

Who would have thought the Yankees would be in first considering their 0-8 record with the Boston Red Sox? Seems as if the Red Sox had the Yankees number this season, but it's the way in which the Yankees play against other Major League teams that shows their true potential.

With an inconsistent CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte taking the hill for the Yankees, the final months of the 2009 season will be interesting to watch down the stretch. After hearing news that pitcher Chien-Ming Wang is declared out for the rest of the season due to arthroscopic surgery on his injured right shoulder, right hander Sergio Mitre will take over the role as the 5th starter who in two starts this season is (1-0) with 5 strikeouts.

The Yankees meet their rival Red Sox August 6-9 in a four game set at Yankee Stadium. At this point of the season, every game becomes critical especially in the always difficult AL East.
