DE Ellis Likely Suspended For Opener

Defense could be down three starters for game against Texans.
In his quest to build a world class defense, new head coach Rex Ryan certainly isn't getting much help from some of the players he was counting on.
The New York Jets already knew that LB Calvin Pace would be suspended for four games prior to the opening of training camp. However, another wrinkle emerged when NT Kris Jenkins strained his calf during one of the first practices. He is sidelined indefinitely and it's quite possible that, if he is rushed back too soon, the problem could linger into the season.
Adding to the bad news pile is the recent speculation that starting DE Shaun Ellis could be suspended by the league for one game due to being arrested for marijuana possession last November. He was also cited for driving without insurance.
Both Jenkins and Ellis are instrumental in stopping the run, something the Jets struggled to do when the former missed games at the end of last season. Without them on the front line, the Houston backfield led by second year man Steve Slaton could have a field day.
One gets the impression that Ryan will not be as tolerant of bone-headed behavior off the field as the previous coaching regime was. His intention to run a dominant defense will be met, one way or the other.
