You know who came out ahead after the Dodger debacle vs the Braves?
Fox TV that is who, as the Giant- Dodger series that starts tonight will be another chapter in this long time rivalry. With the Giants now back just 5.5 games along with the Rockies, it will be a playoff like atmosphere in Northern CA. Adding to that , it has been a long wait for the Giants to play a meaningful baseball game.
After Thursday night, my blog was going to be who is the Dodger you would want up at bat, down a run with two out, Manny or Ethier? My how things have changed.
Now I have to blog about how the over- worked bullpen came apart and how the Dodgers do not look like the same team as the first half of the season. Remember in New York the knock against Torre was always he used the bullpen too much.
Now only that, but Joe may have to call on a spot starter for Wednesday game as Chad Billingsley's status is up in the air right now with a sore hamstring.
The Dodger bullpen in the 4 game Brave series, 15 innings, 16 hits, and 14 runs. Ouch. Even the untouchable Jonathan Broxton faltered in the series, blowing a save on Friday night.
So now do Dodger fans panic, I don't think so, it is all how you look at it. For example, the Yankees have a 6.5 game lead and most fans will tell you the Red Sox have never overcome such a deficit this late in the season. Yeah the Dodgers were up most of the season around 9 to 9.5 games, but that is because the rest of the division was playing bad baseball. So please keep in mind that their 5.5 game lead is the 2nd biggest of any division leader. Not a bad place to be.
There is talk that the Dodgers are looking at Vincent Padilla or John Smotlz to join the team. Most baseball people will tell you that Padilla is a terrible teamate, and Smoltz was just demoted by the Red Sox. Yeah maybe either of them can come in and grab 3 or 4 wins before the end of the season, but they certainly will not save the season.
What the Dodgers need now is some leadership in the lockeroom, remember Joe Torre never panics, he knows about the ups and downs of a 162 game season. So A player should feed off of Torre, pick it up on the field, and rally the team in the locker room. Not sure if Manny is that guy in the locker room, so someone needs to step up, time will tell who that is.
The other goods news is Clayton Kershaw is stepping up as the ace, although not getting the win this weekend, hedid put his team in position to win with his 10 strikeout, 0 run performance on Saturday.
I still feel the Dodgers are the better team, maybe they even lose 2 of 3 this week with the question about Billingsley's health, but I still feel the Dodgers will win the division.
Bad streaks like these make me want to watch this series even more!
